Right now you have SD Standard Definition (Normal, what your used to)
ED is Enhanced Def (better, but only enhanced...not capable of receiving HDTV)
HD is High Def(the best) and very kick ass....I love watching sports and movies on my HDTV--like being at the game

ED=rip-off

Thanks!

So HDTV is better than EDTV. Are all Plasma TV's HD???

Is there anything newer than Plasma?

Is Plasma the top of the line?

Thanks again!

I dont have a plasma....just a 34" widescreen sony vega
picture is unreal
when you buy HD, make sure you buy a widescreen screen, since all HD material is widescreen

Buy the sony it will last you longer and has a great picture never buy a edtv hdtv is not that much more cost. had problems with the first 2 we bought i never turn anything off and after about 4 months both times in the upper corner it got first a green little block then went to pink and red and yellow almost like a spider web had them come get both and had them replace it with a 52 inch flat screen(wide) it was to much trouble in 8 months then was tols and also told the first time that the sony would not mess up, they tried to say it was from leaving it on to much but did not buy it , checked with the company who put in the home system and he said it could of but he also said after i already had the one , that they had trouble with them and should go with sony.

After 2 we choose for the flat wide screen hdtv and it is just as clear picture wise but takes up more room and not the same effect as having it hang on the wall but i was not going to go for 3 trys. happy with the flat screen hdtv all but it not hanging up. ask questions unlike me and don't get sold because they do have a problem with some if you run them for ever the person or owner from robco that is the company that does a lot of the casinos and who put in our home system and got me the right tv and set up right.

Also by going through him i saved money on the tv they buy direct and sold it at cost because of the home system and case they built for all the componets. Prices have dropped almost 1000 to 2000 depending on modles in the last year and a half so shop and ask but would go sony only imo from learning the hard way and not asking a pro before i just went out and bought, just like a little thing but cost 400 and some extra i have dtv the first people that sold me the dud never told me even though it is a hdtv that to get the true hdtv picture you need to buy the hdtv box and was not happy with the picture and had them over 4 times and their techs had no clue but in the corners it was fuzzy looking and had they robco people come out and he said it is called blocking even though it is a hdtv you need the hugues hdtv box and if you have reg dig cable box i would of had to buy the sony hdtv convertoer to get the most crisp picture and strongest signel, lot more to them then i would of though then with the home system and everything i am still learning. but ask questions or you might be sorry i was.

you wont go wrong with the sony just make sure the set up people know what they are doing, that is why i had a company that puts in home theraters do all the work after the problem and have been good to go and they sowed me how to run everything in easy terms because they knew what they were doing the other store techs had know clue or even how to get it across to people. So you might want to look in yellow pages and see home theratres (sp) and call one or two of those companies and tell them you want to get what ever and have them come to your house they will and fit you with what you need and like and they will do a much better job then anyone from a store will for you and stand behind the work.

good luck

Eric

Fletch, Sony I agree. My first one was a 32 " it has never had a service problem. I got it 1991. My new one is 6 months old and it's unreal. Sony For Me.

Some small but necessary advice about buying plasma or HDTV.

You must live in an area that carries it.

Check with your cable company beforehand. Down here we are unable to receive HD and the digital I pay for is very, VERY, marginal. Back in OCT they said an 'upgrade' to carry and put out HD was scheduled for early DEC, but still as of today - nothing.

Of course, most major metropolitan areas are already there, but if you arent in one, or on an island.... something to think about.

WOW!! Thanks for the advice guys. T bell the internet pricing is so much better than circuit city or best buy and I'm torn between paying the extra $$ and getting from a reliable source.

Example: Sony @ Ccity $ 6999(freaking ripoff)
local $ 5500( plus sales tax)
Internet $ 5100 including shipping and wall mount

Fletch, is yours a plasma or projection? I'm getting a headache from doing all the research on this TV. Wifey wants the freaking thing on the wall because of it's size.

Thanks

Here is some VERY good info from one of the best in the business, and I too wouldnt suggest a Sony for the same reason this gentleman mentions as well. Ive seen 3 in person and all 3 had issues with PQ

"42" plasmas:
Front runners are the panasonic SD and HD plasmas. The SD panny proves that resolution is really not critical for good PQ in plasma. Other factors are far more important such as black levels, color fidelity, grey scale etc. No HDCP but new HDCP equipped models are coming this July.

Next is the Pioneer 433CMX (actually this is 43"). Same caveats about black levels, the HD and Elite PRO modes (433HD and PRO800HD) apply with this just as they do with the 50" brother. But this has the same expansion slot as the 503.

The NEC MP3 and MP4 are also highly regarded but are not sold in retail so you will not be able to demo these - unless you call going to the airport or to E*Trade centers demoing

The SD Fujitsu (4233) uses the NEC MP3 glass and also has very good PQ. It has just been replaced with the P42VHA20US which uses panasonic glass so may be even better! This also has HDCP
The HD 42" Fujitsus are ALiS panels (read up on this in the FAQ and also search on ALIS) and have really not been up to scratch except with PAL and HD material. Even so, many ppl prefer the SD Fujistus to the ALiS ones for HD. HOWEVER, the new ALiS panels have been much improved in terms of contrast and phosphor brightness and the newest Hitachi ALiS panel seems to be getting good reviews so maybe ALiS panels are finally worth considering. Model number for the latest ALiS 42" is P42HHA10WS and this has HDCP.

Avoid:
Sony (you may be surprised at that one) as we have not heard anything consistently good so far about their PQ. Even the newer ones.

Consider Gateway, Sampo, Sole'"
