NFL mandated Robert Kraft to install brand new turf in Gillette Stadium for this weekends playoff game. Patriots had become pretty comfortable on their less than perfect muddy sod, where they had only yielded 20 total points over there last 5 home games, winning them all.

NFL mandated that not just between the hash marks be replaced, but the entire field. This turf was delivered and installed yesterday in 4 ft. width & 20 ft. length. Bellchick worked the team out on the new turf last night, evidently pieces were coming up all over.

This is no joke, Saturday night is supposed to be the coldest day in the history of Massachusetts for that particular day. It is predicted to break a 125 year historical low of 0 degrees.

Anyone who has been to Foxboro or Gillette knows its built on a hill, its always windy there, I can guarantee wind will be blowing at least 20mph. These are going to be horrid conditions Saturday night.

Current Foxboro weather for Saturday:

Mostly sunny skies. Cold. Wind chills may approach -20F. High 13F. Winds NNW at 10 to 15 mph.

HOLY CHIT!!!!

HIGH 13F!

WIND CHILL -20F!

No field goals in this game, ball is going to be solid as a rock, no way to get it much past 40 yards in this kind of game, imagine both teams will go for it deep in the opponents territory on fourth down.

So what do you guys think this weather will do to the passing games? Neither team has much rushing right? Seems like 6 points becomes bigger in a low scoring game but the Pats home advantage also might increase under such conditions. Could it come down to special teams. Who's better?

... WIND CHILL ADVISORY LATE TONIGHT INTO SATURDAY...

THIS INCLUDES ALL OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND... EXCEPT BLOCK ISLAND... CAPE COD... MARTHAS VINEYARD... AND NANTUCKET.

ARCTIC AIR IN PLACE COMBINED WITH BRISK NORTH TO NORTHWEST WINDS WILL CAUSE DANGEROUSLY COLD WIND CHILLS OF MINUS 15 TO AROUND MINUS 20 FOR SEVERAL HOURS TONIGHT AND SATURDAY. ACROSS SOUTHWEST NEW HAMPSHIRE... WIND CHILLS AROUND MINUS 25 WILL BE COMMON. THE WORST CHILL WILL BE FELT IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS JUST BEFORE SUNRISE THEN CONTINUE THROUGH AT LEAST NOON.

FROSTBITE AND HYPOTHERMIA ARE OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH WIND CHILL. FROSTBITE CAUSES A LOSS OF FEELING AND A WHITE OR PALE APPEARANCE ON THE AFFECTED AREAS. HYPOTHERMIA DEVELOPS WHEN THE BODY BEGINS TO LOSE HEAT FASTER THAN IT CAN PRODUCE IT.

IF VENTURING OUTSIDE... DRESS APPROPRIATELY COVERING ALL EXPOSED SKIN. DRESS IN WARM CLOTHING AND IN LAYERS. MITTENS ARE A BETTER PROTECTION FROM THE COLD THAN GLOVES. PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGED TO CHECK ON THE ELDERLY. HOUSEPETS SHOULD REMAIN INSIDE....

Found these 2 articles....

Thought they might be of interest to this forum...

The one below is a bit old but good info.

Ever wonder why your fingers, toes, ears and other extremities get especially cold in frigid weather?

The body adjusts to extremely cold weather by adjusting the flow of blood. Crucial organs, such as the heart and liver, get more blood which is diverted away from the extremities, such as the fingers, toes and ears. Blood vessels in the extremities constrict, nearly shutting off, leaving the skin at increased risk of frostbite.

That's the medical definition, but anyone who's ever laced on skates in an outdoor rink, hit the slopes, or even engaged in a friendly snowball fight can tell you that your motor skills decrease in frigid weather. Throwing a football with numb fingers is not only tricky, it can be painful. In fact, playing any position with numb fingers increases the chance of "finger jams", which is simply when numbness prevents you from squeezing the ball the way you normally would and increases the chance of an injury on impact with the ball or an opposing player. It's just one of the many small inconveniences of playing in cold weather. Everything constricts in cold weather, including the pigskin, leaving the ball with an entirely different feel - throwing a cold football is entirely different than throwing a warm football with an expanded hide.

Playing in the cold is perfected through practice, so teams that are forced to practice in the cold are invariably going to do better in that situation. Pay particular attention in cold weather games to the quarterback, and his experience in the situation. Teams that practice in the cold primarily include Green Bay, Chicago, Denver, The Giants, Jets, Eagles, Steelers, Bills, Ravens, Patriots, Browns, Bengals, Redskins and to a lesser degree - The Chiefs and Titans. Players who practice in cold weather changes year to year; Brett Farvre is one of the all time best - in any weather.

There were 10 regular season games in 1998 where the game time temperature was recorded at less than 40 degrees. Those games were;
Week 10 - San Diego @ Denver - 37 degrees
Week 14 - Kansas City @ Denver - 35 degrees
Week 16 - Baltimore @ Chicago - 36 degrees
Week 16 - Tennessee @ Green Bay - 29 degrees - snow
Week 17 - Minnesota @ Tennessee - 35 degrees
Week 17 - Tampa Bay @ Cincinnati - 39 degrees
Week 17 - Detroit @ Baltimore - 39 degrees
Week 17 - Chicago @ Green Bay - 39 degrees
Week 17 - NY Giants @ Philadelphia - 37 degrees
Week 17 - New England @ NY Jets - 37 degrees
Do you know what the 10 coldest games of the year have in common, other than the fact they were the 10 coldest games of the year? In each of the 10 games, the favorite won the game, usually by a landslide. In fact, the favorite had an ATS mark of 8-2 in the 10 coldest games of the year. *I should stop here and note that we are including Chicago as the favorite in their 24-3 win over Baltimore. The game actually closed as a pick em affair, but both teams at some point during the week were -1 point favorites.

Not only did the favorites in these cold wars win the game, like their hot cousins, the favorites dominated. In fact, of all the underdogs in these 10 contests, only twice did the underdog score more than 16 points, Kansas City in their 35-31 loss to Denver, and Tennessee in their 30-22 loss at Green Bay. In the other eight games, the underdogs scored just 72 points combined, or, nine points per game on average. The favorites scored 263 points combined, for better than 26 ppg on average. Again, UNDER THE TOTAL dominated the sportsbooks in these games, as the Under played out to a tune of 7-2-1 in these 10 games.

It's interesting to note that the NFL was pretty fair in the scheduling of the cold wars, as only San Diego & Tampa Bay were asked to go "out of their element" with regards to playing in cold weather. San Diego was wasted in Denver, managing just 10 points, but Tampa Bay shocked many in a 35-0 rout of the Bengals at Synergy Field in 39 degree weather.

In other words, it certainly appears that favorites in a cold weather game are favored for good reason.

How weather generally affects football games
First of all, weather has a huge impact on the game of football. If you haven't been paying attention to it, you've been missing out on a lot of the rationale of why games end up the way they do. Here are a few of the weather highlights to keep in mind when analyzing football games:

Bad weather tends to equalize mismatched opponents. The underdog has a much better chance of keeping the game close or even knocking off the favorite in foul weather. Part of the reason for this is there are more turnovers in bad weather games, and turnovers are the ultimate wild card, usually determining which team wins the game.

Bad weather generally means defensive battles and low scores.

Favor a team playing in its element vs a team playing a team out of its element. The Packers at home in 20? weather have a distinct advantage over the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Likewise, the Buccaneers would have an advantage hosting the Packers on a humid day in November. In general, the better-conditioned team will fare better on a hot, humid day. Also, a high-altitude home team has the edge over the visitors from a low-altitude city.

Cold weather generally hinders the passing game, giving advantage to the team with a superior running game. Really bad weather in general puts more emphasis on the importance of a solid running game, or a very solid short passing game.

The team with a superior kicking game will have a distinct advantage over an inferior kicking team on a bad weather day; especially a windy day.

These are only the highlights, but by paying attention to the expected weather conditions and applying the above principles, you will gain significant skill at predicting the outcome of football games.

good info....the mid 30`s and 0 degrees with a wind chill of 20 below is a pretty significant difference,though.....

not that your favorites trend doesn`t apply....it`s a nice trend....0 degrees is ridiculous....it`s pretty tough to do ANYTHING when it`s that cold.....

one thing i will say....tennessee has played in cold weather....thay played cleveland, pittsburgh, cincy and baltimore for years......i`m in b`more and it`s in the 20`s today.....and it`s bone-numbing cold....especially if the wind picks up....

it could affect guys with pre-existing injuries, though(mcnair and george).....

good stuff...

talk with a guy today that works at Gillette as a electrician. He said that although the new Gillette Stadium was installed with State of the art "turf heaters", its so ****ing cold they have absolutely 0 effect. The pipes are buried 18in below the surface of the field. Its so record breaking cold that they haven't had any effect on warming the brand new sod. Good news is the sod is no longer coming up in pieces. Bad news is it is frozen solid, almost like ice. Almost like frozen Astro turf.

Bellchick is working Patriots out again tonight and under the lights. 4 straight nights practicing outside at night in frozen Stadium . I don't care what anyone says, this is a advantage. I don't have the precise numbers but New England has won something like 12 straight home games when the temperature is under 32 degrees. Its why Miami has a fantastic record at home in September. I see where Tennessee is practicing at night with sweatshirts & hats etc. with the temperature 36 degrees. They are saying all the right things that temperature doesn't matter etc. etc.. Make no mistake Patriots have distinct advantage here. It will be below 0 at kickoff, -15 + wind chill. NFL is ****ing ridiculous even playing this game at night. Afternoon game in St. Louis in a dome?? Why?? Why aren't they playing at night.

Think how stupid this is, Boston Police and relief workers are tying to get homeless off the streets last several nights because Frostbit e can occur within a hours time. There is legitimate concern of people freezing to death. But the NFL is marching 80,000 fans out for a wonderful night freezing in Foxboro. So maybe the rest of the nation can see some snow & ice

Does anyone know when the Titans have played in these type of conditions and the outcome at below freezing temps?
