I remember the race to the moon. It was get there before Russia battle cry. The whole country was bushing hard to win that race.
The cost for 1966 thru 1969 was 24 billion. Now we are told we need to go back to the moon and then onto mars. Mr Bush has said 15 billion will be ear marked for this next few years. True cost would be over 100 billion. It's easy to see that based on what it cost in the 60's. Lets hope they tell the Americam people the truth. Estimate for mars is 300 billion. Wheres the beef coming from. I hope there not thinking of borrowing more from the S S fund that never gets payed back. And why cant more probes like were useing now at a cost of 50 million be used. They will tell us what we need to know. And saves tons of money.

We get it, you dont like space exploration - and on top of that everyone is lying to you. The probes weren't close to 50 mil, and no probes cant and wont do everything humans can. The cost to get to Mars could be as low as 30 billion, at least dont just make things up as you go along. If youre going to be crotchety, at least get your facts right. Bush mentioned in his speach yesterday NASA in effect had all the money they needed they just needed to divert it from other programs like the ISS, which I know you agree with. No need mentioning stuff like that though, I guess youre not paranoid if everyone is out to get you. There seem to be any number of issues because of which you hate in the govt, just out of curiosity have you ever talked to your Congressmen? Written a letter? Or are you mostly a sideline reporter?

Read this article, its a commentary by one of the senior editors at space.com, I think you will find it interesting. Either that or another sign of the great governmental conspiracy against you, either way it will clear up some facts.
Commentary: Reasonable cost of men on the moon and Mars

You know what gets me.

If the Mars rover rolled off its landing platform traveled a few
miles and then started taking pictures of some sort of being
or craft approaching.

We would never see the pictures. Our goverment would protect us from seeing that.

That really pisses me off but I guarantee thats what would happen.

Then they would seal the pictures for 50 years when the American people were ready to accept such a event.

The dirty bastids.

The CIA guys that assassinated Kennedy are living on Mars, but they will probably steer the rover away from their hideout.

Chain Saw your right the dirty basterds in Wash DC been stealing from that for 30 years now. If they had not did that there would be plenty for everyone to 2050.
Ace the paper all reported today 300 to 500 billlon to look at dust. We should use what we have now to see if it's even worth sending men there. We better just spend alittle on the space station that fund is about broke. They want to use it to send folks off into space they better finish it. And they beter take a photo of everyone going to the station.

On the course!
Soc Sec is a joke.

In 1950, the ratio of workers to retirees was 16.5 to 1

Today, it is 3.3 to 1

It is projected to be 2 to 1 by 2030

The simple fact is that not enough money is being paid into the fund to cover the cost of retirees.

YYZ you should at least tell us how it got to be a joke. Maybe even why it was needed after the great depression. Why it's maybe need now for all those that went broke in 2001 and 2002.
Put your money in the market the consevatives say. Ya with World Com, Enron and afew more. YYZ imsure you know with the trillions of dollars taken from that fund it would not be a joke. You are very close with your numbers 3.3 to 1. It's alittle better then that. Should be that by 2007. However it would not have been like that till past 2030. But it's been raped for so many years.

Ace, you act like your a republican or some type of conservative when it comes to the war in Iraq. Other then that you like to spend money just like Bush does. Hell im more of a consevative here then most that call then selfs that. I don't believe in this big government chit and spend like nuts.
One other thing on the biggest government program ever. The SS was the only thing between many old people becoming street people. The depression for many grandparents and Moms Dads of so many of the folks here. Its unreal for anyone to think they would rather have seen them all have nothing. Because many companies back then did little or nothing for there people when it came to reiterment. If you think many Americans would trust the stock market after they all went broke you got to be kidding.

djv,

I think most people know that it was plundered for many, many years. All I am saying is that the money will never be back, because there is nowhere near the amount of people funding it.

It was fine to "borrow" from it 60 years ago, but the money never got repaid. Personally, I think that fund has been dry for many years, but the government would never tell us that.

Ace,

I have seen you defend the space exploration spending and I can see some valid points, but when is enough going to be enough? Our gov't is out of control when it comes to spending and this is just another example, you can't tell me there are not better uses for the money, certainly I would spend it in ways the others might not agree with, but there are problems here that money and money alone could solve, we are spending several fortunes on a chance something good MAY come of it, that's a shame. The city of Pittsburgh is a great example, the city is broke, still spending, but broke, several city employees have been let go including policemen, go figure that crime is on a record pace early this year, good people out of work and higher crime. You and I agree alot on several issues, but are pretty far apart on this one.
