Am still hurting from Thursdays post surgery.I had an abcess tooth worked on.it's sunday and tomr will call the doctor.
My jaw is swollen on one side.My lip was swollen but has gone down. But yest a black and blue mark on my cheek developed. That doesn't bother me.But my cheek is still numb on one side.Like i have just got a shot of novacaine. That tingling feeling like your hand or foot fell asleep.
I never got novacaine though. They put an IV in me.
I followed the dentist directions of post surgery.Ice ,etc.Black and Blue and looking like Chip and Dale don't bother me.but my numbness scares me.
It is now 4 days.I hope there is no nerve damage.Thats what bothering me.The dentist had to go into my 2 back teeth and down in the gum to get the abcess. I'm on amoxicillin and Ibrufan.Only used the Vicoden once.
Has anyone ever had oral surgery and had a similair experince with the numbess??
Chip or Dale reporting....

It sounds like you're having some kind of reaction. Everyone complains about root canals BUT after the novacaine people are usually alright. You would perhaps experience some kind of local discomfort from the work but what you decribe here sounds extreme. You should probably call your dentist and let him know. A root canal rmoves an abscess, it takes the infection out, even though you might feel some tenderness you should not be so swollen and in so muchpain. Take your pain medication and call the dentist. Sounds like you still have infection in there.

Take this fwiw, I am a 2nd year dental student, so I have some thoughts on what this might be but it might not be correct. First off, the best thing to do, as you said, is to go to your dentist on Monday. Now as far as Kodous' response, he assumed you had a root canal. That is not necessarily the case. I took it from your post that you had an abcess that was curettaged...ie, it was sort of scraped out. The bruising and swelling is probably a normal response to the insults of the removal. The lack of sensation, on the other hand, most likely is not normal. You said in your post it was your 2 back teeth. The fact that you have tingling tells me that a nerve was traumatized in some way. The most likely site of damage is the mandibular nerve or one of its branches. This does not necessarily mean that you won't ever have feeling again. It could just be traumatized, and will regain the feeling slowly. Like I said, these are just my educated opinions. It really sounds like the nerve was traumatized, but that doesn't mean that you will never have feeling. Make sure to go to your DDS on Monday. In respect to nerve damage, it will be impossible for your dentist to tell you the long term results of this. Nerves take a long time to heal, so time is important to see how much healing will take place. If you don't mind, please post what ends up happening, I would like to hear.

Did your dentist inform you of the possiblity of nerve damage before your surgery? If not, he could be liable for failure to describe the risks that were possible.

Good luck with things

thanks Kodus.
Saint..it was not root canal. It was like you said. I apprecaite what you said.It makes a lot of sense.
I did know about the possible nerve damage.I signed a pre-op form with about 15 items. One was..possible nerve damage.
I'll call him tomr.I get the stiches out on Thur.It was on a tooth that already had a root canal. The x-rays showed an abcess.
The doctor did say it was a difficult operation and took a lot longer then expected. Also he had to go through more gum under another tooth.I think thats what he said.I was still in lala land somewhat.
Thanks.I'll keep you posted.
