Well, I gave up on Wal-Mart, and have been recently talking to Fedex and going thru their interview process. I had my 5th and final interview with Fedex today, was offered the position and I accepted it. she then said all they have to do is verify all my info and I can start on Friday.

I didnt think twice about it, and now im starting to wonder what they will be checking when they call to verify my degree next week b/c my degree is kinda hairy. I got the ok to walk from my exit counselor my final semester of my senior year, walked, took all the pictures from the university that all graduates do, yada, yada, yada.

Well, that summer I called the university to get my diploma and they said they had to do one final audit before giving the ok for the diploma to be sent out, and they called me back 2 days later, said one of my classes from my freshman year that had transfered from the community college wasnt actually going to be counted toward my total hours, which knocked me down to 118 hours. (ie- 2 hours short of graduation eligibility requiring me to take this one freshman class anywhere to get over the 120 hour requirement to graduate)

They then told me that as soon as I take this one class, ill get my diploma sent to me. Well, i listed on my resume and application at fedex that I graduated, and now that I think about it, i guess "technically" i havent, and due to that mishap, im one class short now and once I take that one class, ill get the piece of paper mailed to me.

So in my mind ive graduated, and thought it was cool to list that way on my resume/job app, but I guess technically if some background check company goes to verify it, they may come back with a "no he hasnt graduated" and then have them call and take the offer back when in fact they made the mistake first, by telling me it was cool to walk and stuff, then to come back a few months after i left town and say, "whoops, sorry, one class isnt going to count and you need to take it for us to send you the piece of paper".

So should I call the Fedex HR lady first thing monday and mention my situation? or just let it go? Now im a little worried.........and hope to God some little technicality like that doesnt cost me a job:confused:  :(

So do you think this one little issue could cost me the management position they just offered me? I mean, i "thought" i had graduated, and then they told me this, and all I have to do is take one measely class, and didnt think it would be a big deal about saying that I graduated until she mentioned the 3rd party company that would be doing my background check. Everything else in my background is squeaky clean, not one blemish......

Unlikely they would check with the school. They may however, ask you for a copy of the diploma. But, if they haven't done that yet as part of the process, they may not do that either.

Suggestion: go back and get the two hours. You'll sleep better at night. Not just this job, but for the future as well.

something fishy about this dude......

isnt this the same guy looking for advice after a "family member" did an instant deposit from neteller into a sportsbook....then was freakin out when neteller came to collect?

the same guy that "has a college degree" yet was going to settle for a 7.00 an hour Wal-Mart job to "work up" into management?

I dunno this guy from Adam......but it sounds like he might have a little more than 2 hours to go on a college diploma.....maybe 120 hours.

I dont know many people with college degrees that bag groceries at WalMart with asperations of being a store manager.......

I could be wrong but it sounds like you told a little fib on your "resume" and you have a lie in place that you want to see how people will respond to it....

I could be wrong.....but if this is a lie it isnt a really good one. If I didnt have a college diploma in my possession, I dont think I would be telling a place of business that I did......just my opinion.

 yes, you are WRONG! I had 121 hours, and when my final audit was done, to get my diploma, one of my 3 hour classes was not counted, thus them saying as soon as you take it, wherever, and have the credit transfered we will send you the diploma. Why would I lie about something as easily provable about that? I am planning on going back and taking this class as soon as its offered at my local community college. But my main question, and legit question at this point, is when I go in to sign the acceptance letter on monday, do i mention the "real deal" about the 118 hours, and my diploma is depending on one class, or just let it slide, hope they dont catch it, and if they do, and they call and renig the offer, then tell them the real deal? I was thinking that I could possibly go in there on monday, tell the HR lady that earlier that morning another company called to offer me a position, IF I could clear up one think on my background check, IE-the college degree that came back negative, I told them the situation, they noted it or accepted that, then made the offer. ANd basically tell her that that company's background check company had an issue with it, until i explained it, so ill go ahead and just explain it to her before their 3rd party company starts to do their research just in case they have the same issue--what would you do if you were in my shoes?

And yes, in all my future job apps, I will list it as no degree, 118 hours, with 1 class pending........I just need to get out of this pickle......

I have seen it happen once before to a young woman who claimed she had "graduated" on her resume and never really did.

They did a routine background check on her.

She got laid off/separated from her employer until she could go back and finish her degree, but the employer never took her back and now she has a "terminated" statement on her past employment record.

yea, and I would tell the HR lady.

And DONT come up with freaking excuses how this is so totally not your fault.

She will not even think twice about keeping you on.

Its your transcript. You need to know about it and be aware of it. Phrase it in a way so it shows you take responsibility for it, but you were not a 100% airhead about it.

Here is the idiot proof test to for everyone to know whether you have graduated or not.

If you have a diploma signed from the college. You have graduated and may call yourself a graduate of that institution.

I dont plan on making excuses and not taking the blame for something I was responsible for. I know what the situation is, what i need to do to get my degree, but where I am now, I need to deal with this imminent situation--so when I tell her on Monday, how do I go about it, bring it up, and what exactly should I say?

don't lie

don't lie

ELAINE: (unconvincing) Yeah. Oh, yes, yes, he was very helpful.
(hesitant) Uhm, because, you know, Art and I were getting into this whole thing about his business. Uhm, you know he's an importer-exporter.

SUSAN: (not convinced) Yeah.

ELAINE: (explaining, with gestures) Uhm, George felt that I was too adamant in my stand that Art should focus on the exporting and forget about the importing.

SUSAN: (spotting an inconsistency) Wait a minute. I thought that Art wanted to give up the exporting.

ELAINE: What'd I say?

SUSAN: The importing.

ELAINE: (caught out) I did. Uh...

SUSAN: So, what does he uh, import?

ELAINE: (extemporising) Uh... chips.

SUSAN: Oh. What kinda chips?

ELAINE: Potato.

SUSAN: Ah.

ELAINE: (embroidering) Some corn.

SUSAN: And what does he export?

ELAINE: Diapers.

[Move to George's Apartment]

Susan stands sifting through some magazines, when the door opens and George enters. He's still feeling his face where Marisa punched him.

GEORGE: Hi.

SUSAN: Hi. (pointedly) So, George, what does Art Vandelay import?

George looks surprised by the question, and thinks for a moment before replying.

GEORGE: Matches? Long matches.

If you bring up the education it will open a pandoras box of woe. If I was the HR lady I would ask questions like: Why didn't you look into which community college credits were eligible for the transcript transfer two years ago when you transferred? Why didn't you work through the graduation process, receive your diploma after the pictures were taken. How do you intend on finishing through a community college when most colleges require your final semester to be completed on campus.

Your answers can't possibly build a positive image of your professional skills at this point. What are you going to tell her, "They told me to walk, dude."

Make sure you wear a handsome "suite" and tie. Maybe she'll be distracted from your bumpy academics.

Update--Here is what happened today. I showed up today, and the HR lady was busy doing an interview, and her assistant handed me my original application and the acceptance letter that I had to sign as well, and asked me to please update my phone number as the one I put on there was recently changed and she said to also update my mailing address as it changed last week. Well, after doing that, I also went ahead and noted my degree situation in a few sentences right in the college degree section on the app, in the same color ink, and it looks like I wrote it when i did the rest the first time. She said they would be sending my app (the actual app I was writing on) to a 3rd party vendor to do the actual background check. Well, if they do that, they will have the actual info right there and it will verify 100%, so ill be ok. So im hoping this actually works, I had no idea the assistant would just hand me the original app, that was the best thing that could have happened.....and I never saw the HR lady, she was in an interview the whole time........hope this works out.....if not, or either way, ive learned a valuable lesson........thanks all for the info
