This little gem appears to be flying under the radar.....the story revolves around a seedy old Fremont street casino. The director of the casino is Shelly, played by Alec Baldwin, an old school vegas casino operator..he still believes in knee breaking.....Bernie, played by William Macy, is a woeful loser who's mere presence stops "hot gamblers""in their tracks...slot machines quit paying, blackjack players can't win, crap tables go cold....he is so unlucky when he gets coffee the creamer is empty...He is in debt to Shelly for past gambling and is paying back by being casino "cooler".
Bernie is down to his last week of obligation to Shelly and Shelly is under pressure to change casino to modern money making methods...Shelly being "old vegas" does not want the "Baby strolling epcot center crowd" that infests the strip....he also wants Bernie to stay as he is the absolute best at his trade....Bernie finds hot and sticky love with a twenty-something cocktail waitress and things change....
My wife and I have been going to vegas since early 1970's and thought this movie hits it on the head.....change is not necessarily good.....four out of five stars...
