No Pac-10 team has ever gone through the conference season undefeated since the league expanded to 10 teams in 1978-79. Stanford hits the halfway mark 9-0 after surviving scares versus Southern Cal at home, and Arizona State on the road.
The second-ranked Cardinal overcame a 19-point second-half deficit at Oregon Saturday to remain one of two unbeaten teams in Division I-A. Stanford currently enjoys a three-game lead in Pac-10 play, marking the first time since 1993 (Arizona) that a school has that big a lead at the halfway point.
Arizona finished 17-1 five times in Pac-10 play, including last year. The one loss was a home setback to Stanford.
The 12th-ranked Wildcats have a four-game winning streak at Stanford?s Maples Pavilion, but were manhandled earlier this year in Tucson by the Cardinal as a five-point favorite, 82-72. The final difference was 10 points, but Stanford outclassed the Wildcats and led by 15-20 points most of the second half.
March Madness and talk of the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) is still a month away, but it is definitely a down year for the Pac 10. Stanford is playing for a top seed, while Arizona would wind up with a four or five seed if the season ended today.
Oregon is currently third in the standings with a 5-4 conference record, and definitely could have helped its standings with a victory over Stanford. The Ducks are in a three-way logjam with UCLA and California. The Bruins and Golden Bears might be relegated to the NIT if they don?t pick it up the next month and a half.
