The Yankees and Rangers have an agreement in principle on a monster trade that will send superstar shortstop Alex Rodriguez to New York in exchange for Alfonso Soriano, Newsday has learned.

No announcement is expected today, as a couple very minor technical details are still to be worked out. However, all sides remain confident everything will be finalized within a few days, a source said.

The Yankees are expected to send a minor-league pitcher along with Soriano to Texas to complete the deal.

The impetus for the deal was Rodriguez's surprising willingness to agree to play third base. Once Rodriguez signaled to the Yankees that he'd be willing to play third for them and defer the coveted shortstop position to Derek Jeter, a longtime friend, the talks moved very quickly.

The Yankees recently lost their starting third baseman Aaron Boone to a knee injury suffered in a pickup basketball game a month ago and have been seeking a viable replacement.

The blockbuster deal that puts Rodriguez, perhaps baseball's best all-around player, in New York, is a major blow to the rival Boston Red Sox, who spent many weeks chasing and courting Rodriguez. However, Boston's deal with Texas and A-Rod broke down when the Red Sox demanded that A-Rod and Texas both pay handsomely to offset the Rodriguez contract.

The Yankees have never let money stand in their way, and the acquisition of Rodriguez will push their payroll past $200 million. However, it is thought the Rangers have agreed to pay the Yankees some money to mitigate the drastic difference in the contracts. Rodriguez has $189 million and seven years remaining on his record $252-million deal, while Soriano is a tremendous bargain at $5.4 million this season. Soriano is ineligible for free agency until after the 2006 season.

It is believed Rodriguez also has agreed to alter the deferrals in his contract to get the deal done. It is not known how much money Rodriguez has agreed to defer.

I posted my feelings on this in the baseball forum. I'm not a Boston fan at all, but man, I hate the fvcking Yankees. This is not good at all for baseball. I don't care who beats them... as long as it is someone.

ESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez will be playing third base for the Yankees this season, alongside shortstop Derek Jeter, if Newsday is to be believed.

The 600,000-plus circulation newspaper on suburban Long Island, N.Y., reported on its Web site Saturday afternoon that A-Rod is so desperate to get out of Texas that he'd be willing to switch positions. Second baseman Alfonso Soriano would be going the other way, leaving New York.

However, ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that, according to a baseball official with knowledge of the negotiations, it's not a done deal quite yet. The official said "issues remain" that still could stand in the way of the deal being completed.

Terming Newsday's report "inaccurate," the source said, "Is there a deal yet? No. Could it happen? Yes."

So "premature" might be the most accurate way to characterize the Newsday story. Since Friday, the trade has gone from a gigantic long shot to well within the realm of possibility, the official said.

Nevertheless, the two teams, as well as Rodriguez and agent Scott Boras, still face some of the same complications that deep-sixed A-Rod's trade to Boston, even after the Red Sox and Rangers reached an agreement in principle. It appears all sides in this new deal are trying to avoid tripping over the same hurdles that torpedoed that deal, by approaching this one as cautiously and quietly as possible.

Rodriguez would agree to a restructuring of his contract. And that restructuring must be amenable to the Rangers, the Yankees, the commissioner's office and the players' union. So it probably will take at least a couple of days before the trade gets resolved or falls apart.

According to the Newsday Web report, those hurdles are in the process of being knocked down. No announcement was to be expected Saturday, according to Newsday, as some minor technical details remain to be worked out, but the story reported that all sides remain confident everything will be wrapped up within a few days.

Newsday had reported Saturday morning that the Yankees were in serious talks with the Rangers about an A-Rod trade.

At the same time, the New York Post, which is usually leading the way when sensational stories pop up, reported only that the Yankees had asked the Rangers about their interest in making such a trade for Soriano.

Early Saturday afternoon, The Associated Press reported that the Yanks and Rangers had started preliminary discussions Wednesday night and that it was still too early to tell whether they would lead to a deal. Rodriguez has a no-trade clause but has said he would be amenable to a deal to the Yankees, the AP's source said.

Soriano, 25, is signed only through 2004, for $5.4 million. He can't be a free agent until after the 2006 season. Rodriguez, 28, is owed $189 million over the next seven years, although he can opt out after 2007. Thus, the Yankees would take on an extra $183.6 million guaranteed if the deal is consummated.

However, according to Newsday's source, the Rangers would be willing to foot some of that bill. The American League source also told Newsday that the two clubs talked late into Friday night about the trade.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman admitted to the Post on Friday that he has approached the Rangers about a deal but initially was turned down.

"There are many times I float weather balloons to my counterparts," Cashman told the Post. "I won't comment on trade rumors, but it should come as no surprise that I am constantly floating weather balloons to my counterparts. Ninety-nine [percent] of them get popped and fall to the ground."

Texas officials did not immediately return telephone calls, according to the AP, which reached Boras, only to have him say, "I can't comment on the situation."

The Post reported that the Yankees would likely have to give up Jose Contreras as well as minor-league catcher Dioner Navarro in such a trade.

The Red Sox and Rangers talked extensively this winter about a deal involving A-Rod, but could not get it done, thanks to A-Rod's contract. The two teams did agree to a trade in December, but the union refused to approve it, declaring that A-Rod was setting an unacceptable precedent by diminishing his contract's value.

Rangers owner Tom Hicks then announced that Rodriguez would stay with the Rangers, and last month the team named A-Rod its captain.

The Yankees recently lost third baseman Aaron Boone to what likely is a season-ending knee injury. The trade would create a void at second base for the Yankees. Enrique Wilson and Miguel Cairo would have to share the duties.

Rodriguez, who has 345 career homers, is coming off an MVP season in which he hit .298 with 47 homers and 118 RBI.

All the jealous people need to get over it. Unlike alot of owners in baseball or sports in general, George spends money to put out a quality product & to win. Sports would be better if more owners weren't just worried about their own pockets.

It would be better if all owners were like that, for sure. But when one guy practically hijacks the rest of the league, it's horrible for the competitive balance of the league, which in turn hurts the league as a whole.

:iagree:

As a Red Sox fan, local radio is filled with people here that are blind in one eye and can't see out of the other. For the past years, Sox fans were BS because "the Yankees are ruining baseball, and will just spend the money for anyone." Well, that's the cost of doing business...The same people who were so annoyed with all the big $$$ free agents the Yanks got were the ones cheering this offseason which brought Foulke, Schilling, etc. They had A-Rod, they just didn't want to shell out the money the Yankees were willing to pay.

Arlington, TX (But a Missourian at heart)
That's typical for the Rangers...Our biggest problem...NO PITCHING!!! Everyone that leaves Texas seems to have a hell of alot better year... You can't hope to outscore your oppent in every game. The Yankees will probably win the WS after acquiring Alex. He'll miss this beautiful ballpark. By the way, I've been to alot of ballparks in my days, but I think The Ballpark, in Arlington, TX is by far the most beautiful one I've ever seen...

ABSOLUTLY!!! You guys could be stuck here in Pittsburgh where where asshole Kevin McClatchey cares only about his bottom line and not improving the team one bit, hey it's his business and if the bottom line is whats important then so be it, but this jack ass lies to the fans every time he opens his mouth about making the team better and competitive, hell the Pirates could not find competitive with a map and a compass. This dickhead McClatchey went so far last season as to fire his secratary who was with the team over 20 years, Christ how much could she have been pulling in to make that a good move?

Long live the Yankees.

Scott4 you still have a good bet in The Red Sox, provide Schilling and Martinez stay healthy. In a short series, they can be hard to beat. --- Some guy on ESPN said the Yankees now have a BubbleGum Card Team.

And if these moves fail, The Yankees will extract every teams players at mid-season..like they always do!

One thing though, i haven't read up on it, is the Yankee farm bone dry ?

Anyway, what can be better then watching The Yankees lose in The World Series. LOL

National League fans in New York are calling them The Buffalo Bills.

i just read something interesting in today's ny daily news. texas has agreed to pay $64 million of the $179 million that is remaining on a-rod's salary. that makes him about a $14 million a year player, instead of a $25 million a year player, from the yankees perspective.

now subtract the $5.4 million thast soriano will earn this year in salary plus the $4 million the yanks are saving on drew henson's salary plus the $4.7 million that they will probably save on boone's salary, & the a-rod will be a wash.

so from a salary point of view, the a-rod salary will not raise the yanks payroll.

and while the yanks still will scarce talent in the minors, they still have 2 outstanding prospects left with 3b- duncan & c-navarro.

AR182 - I'm glad to see someone else has a grasp of the financials of this deal. When all is said and done with Soriano and Henson's contracts gone, the Yankees get A-Rod for a bargain. I believe they will wait on Boone to see how he rehabs with the possibility of him playing 2B by the end of August or September. The platoon of Cairo/Wilson/Almonte would be able to work for a month or two but won't last the whole season. George will probably look to upgrade that position by May as well as deal for a left-handed pitcher by June/July.

brian cashman deserves the credit for this deal. he is the one who initially called texas. and the amazing thing about this deal is that texas has paid out $136 million for 3 years & the yanks are paying $116 million for 7 years towards a-rod's contract.

bigdad,

good to see you posting in the general forum, but don't know if they will go with those players at 2nd base. what is robbie alomar is doing ?

they still need some starting pitching, so this doesn't guarantee anything.

new york newday is reporting in today's paper said that the red sox tried to squash to yankees trade. here is an excerpt from that article:

But before Alex Rodriguez and the Yankees could secure their future together, the Boston Red Sox did all they could to break up the marriage in a frantic, back-door attempt to upstage their hated rivals and convince the All-Star shortstop to play at Fenway Park.

Multiple baseball sources said the Red Sox reached out to both the Texas Rangers and Rodriguez Saturday. In these discussions, the Red Sox offered to take Rodriguez and his bulky contract "as is" - a stunning reversal from their previous position.

According to a source, a mutual friend of both Rodriguez and the Red Sox approached the All-Star on Boston's behalf. The acquaintance suggested that, unlike in the failed December negotiations, the team might be willing to take on Rodriguez's entire contract. In December, the Red Sox had insisted that Rodriguez take a pay cut.

Saturday, Rodriguez enthusiastically told the go-between, "tell [Red Sox president] Larry Lucchino to - off!"
