Bad beats late last night

I didn't have any action on the late games yesterday, but I stayed up to see how two of my favorite teams, USC and the Clippers, would do. USC led by double digits early, was tied with about 3 minutes to play and still managed to lose the the 8 1/2 point cover. The Clips had 117 points scored in the first half of their game and the game still went under 202 1/2 on a game winning shot that prevented overtime.

Those two games got me thinking back to some of the good and bad beats I've had over the years. I'd say my most recent one was in Las Vegas for the Super Bowl party when I had Chicago and Portland over 191 for the total. The two teams combined for about 151 points in the first three quarters but then absolutely started tanking in the fourth. It looked like a sure bad beat but then unbelievably these two sorry teams couldn't score in the last minute and went into overtime tied at 91. Needless to say I loved the turnaround and I ordered an extra bloody mary and tipped the barkeep an extra buck (generous guy that I am ;)).

Thats just acid in your stomach. I posted a thread a while back about this, on back to back nights I lost games on last second uncontested 3 pointers - where the winning team is winning by so much that they start to walk off the court and let the losers make a garbage time 3. Freaking acid.

That's the one aspect of hoops I hate - the garbage points in the last ten seconds. Nothing worse than a guy getting a dunk or layup as your team is walking off the court - only to kill your win. Never see something like that in football, teams aren't kicking FGs with no time remaining when they are down 17 just to bone you.

Ooooh, I disagree, Blackman. A friend of mine lost 3 dimes when Doug Flutie scored a meaningless touchdown vs. KC on the last play of the game in San Diego this season. I have also seem running backs break touchdowns late to kill what look like certain underdog winners when the team is ostensibly trying to run out the clock. I do agree that basketball seems to have more of these situations, though.

Yeah, you're right Nick. I think I phrased it wrong. You can get backdoored like that in football as well, but you'll never have a team score on you because your squad is literally not on the playing field anymore. For some reason those games really ice me.

how about teams like boise st and spurrier florida teams, these guys dont hold back. 2 years ago boise in a bowl game scored in the last minute for the cover against iowa st when they could of took a knee. It happens in all sports, but in college basketball you see it alot because of the fact that your taught to never give up when your losing and dont foul when your winning

I understand, Blackman.

Yeah, I think I tend to remember the bad beats more than the miracle wins for the most part. I'm guessing this is the case with most gamblers. I always tell people I'd rather just get blown out on a bet than lose a nail biter or a bad beat. That would take the fun out of it, though :).

Agree 100% - as sick as it sounds if the play is destined to be a loss, I'd rather conceed the loss by halftime then be at the edge of my seat and lose in the closing seconds. Games like UNLV this week (meaningless layup at the buzzer that is not counted, see a winning score flash on the screen, only to have the officials review the layup and count it, ruining the cover  ) make my blood boil. Losing a play like that is exactly the reason why people go on tilt.

That's poor thinking.

If you get "blown out", chances are you didn't do a very good job on your end, as far as capping went. If you lose a close one, you can perhaps find solice in your thinking on the game.

Losing the close ones is something we should all be able to handle. It's when you get blown out every other game that you need to ask what the fuk you are doing in this business.

Hey sometimes the best handicapped game ends up a 50 point ATS loss. I am a strong believer that reducing stress helps a handicapper. For that reason I'd say in many cases having your side or total get hammered and just wiping the slate clean for the next day is better than thinking you had the "right side" and chasing some thing that isn't there.

I believe that Flutie pass in the KC/SD game made all the money on the game switch hands.....I had the over so I was begging for a meaningless score......

Football has its prevent defense....
Basketball has the foul game......
Most sports have garbage time if the game gets way outta hand

I see some crazy stuff in these games.....some of them I was on and some I just watched.....not saying the "fix" was on, just saw some things happen that made my jaw drop if I was on the game or made me say "damn glad I'm not on this one"....

I remember a few years back Pats went out to Denver to play a Monday nighter....I called my local on Thursday, got a piece of Denver at like -7.....put a 5 teamer together also......Chiefs played the Sunday night game and put a spanking on Da Raiders to get my fourth team in on the parlay.....

Monday night rolls around, if Denver covers I stand to make like 2200 counting straight action and parlay that pays 1000.....if Denver fails to cover I make 400......I call my local Monday night, he's writing all Broncos and moves the line to -9......now I'm thinking middle time but back out cuz Denver Donkeys should kill tonight.....

End story.....Denver up like 11 with 5 minutes left, whoever was at quarterback that night for Denver was taking a knee......

WTF??? TAKING A KNEE WITH 5 MINUTES LEFT???? I knew then I was going to get the backdoor.....sure enough Pats get the ball back, Denver on the sidelines whooping it up, Pats get the cheap 5 and 10 yard passes and march down the field for the backdoor cover.......

Watched a college bowl game a couple years back..........favorite of -7 was up by 10 points, about 1:15 left on the clock and the other team has the ball and THEY'RE KNEELING ON IT.......think it was OK State and someone else......That $hit just doesn't happen to me, then I thought about Pats/Denver game I just described......

Arena game about 3 years ago.....I need a tie score to go OT and make my over wager....one team down by 7 with like 30 seconds left......on the 5 yardline......they're afraid of leaving too much time on the clock, so they take a knee twice, then on third down the qb tries some lame run that gains like 2 yards......fourth down they have an incomplete pass and the game ends....This was even a playoff game to boot....I thought for sure with 4 downs they could put it across the goalline but I didn't count on them wasting 2 of them......

For some reason I feel safer betting totals than I do trying to pick which team is going to show up that night......lately these last few years I have become almost a total totals player....I would say at least 85 to 90% of my wagers have been on totals....can anybody out there relate to what I'm saying about this......anyone else have the notion that totals are "safer"......(when in most cases this feeling is ungrounded in reality knowing that totals are often times sketchy.....Yeah, one team can be up like 34 to 7.....the bettor whose team has the 34 can go to bed while the guy who bet the total of 43 is still sweating the last 2 minutes either needing a score or wanting both teams to drop dead....)
