Norton System Works has a "One Button Checkup" that I use a couple times a week as a maintenance tool. It scans 10 different aspects of my computer. I also eliminate temp files, temp internet files, recycle bin stuff, once a week. (I have all my user names and passwords written down)

I agree with all that, also try running some type of defrag program like on Norton or the built in one on Windows. Once every few weeks I leave it on overnight to defrag and it is noticeably better in the morning.

AR182 - it sounds like you got the "virus" I caught last week. I had to have a friend clean out my computer and I lost a ton of files and material I had ignorantly stored never thinking to have a back-up. Norton supposedly can't trace this "strand" which has become a big problem. Best of luck!

P.S. Henson is the real deal and I hope he ends up in Green Bay or the Giants open their eyes and make a push...

This one appears to be really ugly...I copied this from Yahoo

Netsky.B Tunnels Through Windows Systems

Thu Feb 19, 4:24 PM ET Add Technology - NewsFactor to My Yahoo!

Jay Wrolstad, www.enterprise-security-today.com

A particularly nasty virus is spreading over the Internet, attacking via e-mail and then rapidly infecting the hard drives of computers running Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT - news) Windows systems.

The Netsky.B worm is a mass-mailing worm that uses its own SMTP engine to send itself to the e-mail addresses it finds when scanning hard drives and mapped drives. It searches the drives for folder names containing "share" or "sharing," and then copies itself to those folders. The virus also attempts to deactivate the MyDoom.A and MyDoom.B viruses.

The worm presents a problem for businesses and consumers, because it is capable of spreading through peer-to-peer software. It also represents an emerging and troubling trend toward blended threats, which use more than one spreading mechanism.

Cluster Bomb Attack

Netsky.B is a "cluster bomb" worm, explained Ken Dunham of security firm iDefense. "This virus can create as many as 300 copies of itself in a network once it is inside," he told NewsFactor.

Another distinguishing characteristic of Netsky, compared to other recent worms, is that it does not leave open the back door, said Jimmy Kuo a research fellow at McAfee AVERT, an arm of Network Associates (NYSE: NET - news). "The file-sharing mechanism is helping this virus spread rapidly."

As such, the virus is adding hundreds of files to each of the infected machines, and shows no signs of slowing down, Kuo told NewsFactor. He recommended that when users retrieve files they should scan them first, and/or make sure there are not multiple extensions in files received.

As of Thursday morning, Netsky.B was spreading in the wild, and Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC - news) raised the threat level associated with it from three to four (five is the highest). "I don't think this has reached its peak yet," Dunham said.

Networks Are Vulnerable

"The sharing mechanism could have a dramatic impact on networks," said Dunham. Some 100,000 Netsky.B interceptions have been made worldwide, he noted, although the number of infected machines is lower.

Using spoofed "from" addresses, the worm employs an array of subject headings, such as "hi," "hello," "read it immediately," "something for you," or "warning," in an effort to get recipients to open the infected e-mail attachment.

The Netsky virus, also known as "Moodown," first emerged earlier this week, and initially spread rapidly in Europe. The B variant was first detected on Wednesday.

Turn Off Unused Services

As with previous worms, users should be wary of opening any e-mail attachments and are advised to upgrade their security software or get the appropriate software patches.

Also, Symantec advised that users and systems administrators should turn off and remove any unneeded services. By default, many operating systems install auxiliary services that are not critical, such as an FTP server, telnet and a Web server. If they are removed, blended threats have fewer avenues of attack, and there are fewer services to maintain through patch updates.

Chopsticks - THAT WAS IT!!! I've heard from a few friends that somehow they found out about it through a virus detection program available on their work computer. Basically they said the same thing in the article that e-mails were determined as a source of getting into the hard drive...

I'd love to get my hands on the person who started this!

bigdad,

accorsi has hinted that he will take a qb in the draft, but from what i have read that big ot from iowa is projected to be a great player. i think if one of the big 2 is available when the giants are on the clock, they would be nuts not to take either one.

Accorsi Unsure if Collins is Long-term QB

By Bob Glauber

February 20, 2004

Indianapolis -- The Giants have begun negotiations with Kerry Collins' agent about a contract extension. Even so, that doesn't guarantee Collins will be their long-term quarterback.

General manager Ernie Accorsi said Thursday that he has had preliminary discussions with David Dunn about a new deal for Collins, whose three-year contract expires after the 2004 season. But Accorsi hedged his bets on Collins' future by acknowledging that the team might draft a quarterback or even trade for Drew Henson, the former Yankees prospect who has decided to play football.

"Kerry is young , has had some real good years for us, has taken us to the Super Bowl," Accorsi said. "But by the same token, it doesn't mean you ignore the possibility for the future. Ultimately, we have to make a decision, but you have to constantly be aware of the perpetuity of the franchise, and you have to think it through and weigh all of this."

Accorsi wouldn't get into parameters but suggested it would not be the long-range contract Collins envisioned after last .season. Collins said then that he would prefer to sign a multiyear agreement that would be his last in the NFL.

Accorsi wouldn't even guarantee that Collins would be next year's starter. "I don't know what's going to happen," he said. "I assume he is, but I'm not making any prediction on that position."

Accorsi pointed to his days as a Baltimore Colts executive, when the team was concerned about life after Johnny Unitas. "If you were looking for Unitas' successor when he was 31, then you're looking for anybody," he said. "You have to prepare yourself at that position."

So Accorsi insists that's not necessarily a reflection of Collins' standing with the team. "I don't want that to be construed as a non-vote of confidence," Accorsi said. "I would answer the same thing at any position you asked."

The Giants will look closely at Henson, although the Dolphins are believed to be in the best position to trade for the former Michigan quarterback. The Giants, with the fourth overall pick, also will consider quarterbacks Eli Manning of Mississippi, Ben Roethlisberger of Miami (Ohio), Phillip Rivers of North Carolina State and .J.P. Losman of Tulane.

Accorsi attended Henson's individual workout in Houston last week, and he will scout the other four quarterbacks, along with new coach Tom Coughlin.

AR182 - I believe Accorsi is now faced with his head on the chopping block, especially with this draft. While I may be a Giant fan in the minority I think they would be best suited with Gallery, OT from Iowa, versus trading up or down at #4. If they could trade a 2nd round pick for Henson OR try to get one of the first picks in the start of the 2nd round to possibly get Rivers that would be key. Rivers has something you can't put your finger on similar to a player like Favre or Jeter in baseball. He is not by any means big in size but I truly believe he will be special in the NFL. They MUST have the vision to look towards the future now as Collins has been badly beaten up the last 3 years. Palmer and Garrett are not NFL QB's and they need to get someone this year.
