Ok, im seriously stumped here, have till Monday Morning to make my decision, and needs yalls input and advice please. A month ago I was offered a position with FEDEX Express, as a Courier, am currently in Courier training, and will start my route in 2 months. Yesterday I was called by Hertz and offered a Station Manager position at a local airport here, and am stumped as to which to take--here are the specs on each--

FEDEX- Courier, $14/hr to start, part-time, shift is M-F, no weekends, 3pm-9pm. Commute is 30 mins each way, had to sign a 2 year contract stating id stay at this location for the next two years as a courier. They have a Management program, takes 2-3 years to get on as a Manager and Managers start between $45k-$50k. Managers work 12 hour shifts M-F. Work is pretty physical, outdoors, and in traffic daily. Takes 6 months to land a full-time position.

HERTZ- Station Manager Position. $32,000 Salary to start, company car, being a new manager they said id get the suckiest hours/shifts to start--nights and weekends. Appears to be upward mobility potential, said you could be a Senior Mgr ($38-44k) within a year if you are good, and a City Mgr($65-$75l) in 4-5 years if you are willing to move. Commute is 10 mins every day.(They did say on average you will work 50 hours a week)

Here is what I want to do--Get into Management, and work my way up. I am having the hardest time deciding which company to go to work for. FEDEX is alot bigger company, so there are alot more openings all over the USA, but last year they did layoff/offer early retirement to over 250 Managers across the US--so that did concern me a little. Both companies offer me full benefits right off the bat, with FEDEX's being better than Hertz's. At Hertz Id help manage 100 employees, at Fedex, each station has about 40-50 employees. I just cant figure out which would be the better company to work for, which company offers the best opportunities for upward movement career wise, and need yalls input. Please let me know which you would take and why

:)

he and my dad tried to get an NFL team in the 90s. Unfortunately Jax and Carolina got the two teams. Fed ex is the largest public company in memphis and we are the largest private. I have no idea about the infrastructure of fed ex, but i can assure it would be a nice place to hang your hat someday

hemi,

Benefits would be a big factor for me. What is the medical coverage and how much does it cost you a month if anything?
How about 401k match per month ( some folks I know do get
up to 9 % of their pay matched by the company every month). And or a retirement plan....upon early seperation from the company...can you take the plan funds with you? Some folks can, some must wait 'till they're OF AGE. How many weeks vacation?
Paid vacation?....some folks even get cash in lieu of vacation or can save and roll over vacation for the next year. Sick time?..
short term disability?...long term disability?. Many factors must come into play when making a decision like that.....good luck on which ever one you choose.

TT

I thought with Fedex you had to kick in some of your own money when getting a route. Thats how it was just 2 months ago when they did a story about Fedex on MSNBC. Your traing will be more like a package handler. You will learn how to load trucks and how to trace missing parcells.
You want this type of work try for UPS.
Or take the Hertz.

nope, no $$$$ to kick in whatsoever, you just get the sucky routes to start out with......and the longer you work there, the better the route you get.......

My two cents....

My two cents....

As a manager I would expect to work 50-60 hours a week, for any company. Given that you would have the opportunity to get weekends off as you move into mgmt with Fed-Ex,that would push me to take that posistion. Fed-Ex is extremely well run and that business model is much more stable to me than the car rental industry. Please let us know which you decide to go with and how it goes for you.

fed ex, hands down.
Working for a rental car company sounds like a series of headaches and suckiness to me, and as a manager, they will salary you and screw you on hours worked.

Well, it all depends on how far of an outlook you are in life...You want the fast money or do you want to plan ahead??? All on you man. For me, benefits (medical), a good 401K, and stock options come before a job that is only separated by only 10-15 grand. Those 3 make up for the loss in income. Whatever you decide, best of luck...

Wareagle,
If you don't mind me asking, what is your dad's name? He sounds like a well known figure here in Memphis.

FedEx hands down. Looking beneath the surface, FedEx has one of the best benefits packages that I know of. (I worked for FedEx during college) Travel perks are nice too.

You face placing your neck on the chopping block when you enter in a mangerial position. Companies are always consolidating and constantly laying off. I work in a manufacturing industry where we design and make IC's (integrated circuits) and always run a risk of having our work shipped overseas due to cheaper labor. I, myself, have lasted 6+ layoffs so far (knock on wood). IMO, it's not the young and cheap managers that companies want to layoff. It's the old timers who have built up large yearly incomes who do the same thing that you would but for triple the pay. Also, if you're looking into the 401K thing, be sure that whatever company you choose will either MATCH your contribution dollar for dollar or at least 50 cents to the dollar and does not have a ceiling on how much they will match your contribution per year. If you are young and could afford it, I would recommend investing at least 15% of your income into your 401K. It'll pay off in the long run, especially if your company you choose does not offer a pension plan. Anyway, sorry to ramble on and on, but I get off on this kind of stuff. Again, best of luck on whatever you decide to do...

about 401ks, my company matches 1/4th of the first 3% that the employee contributes   That inlcudes having no retirement as well  I'd love to have some of your matches! I've never heard of one that sucks as bad as mine.

That's one of the good things about the company I work for...They match you dollar for dollar up to 6% of your contribution. I'm going on my 10th year at the company and have contributed, in some years, depending on the market and it's projections for that year, up to 13%. But never investing in just the company's stock alone. The key word to making a good profit in your 401k...diversify
