I just don't get these people. I mean, how much is enough? I would think that once you hit that billion mark you pretty much have more money than you'll ever be able to spend. Why would you keep on going? Is it all ego, or what? I would be in a mansion in Vegas, and neither me nor any close friend or family member would work the rest of our lives.

bj,

it's not that they keep on going to feed their egos... its that these figures for charts like this are for their overall net worth, not their liquid assets. I.e, Billy Gates would need to sell everything he owned to have 46 billion lying around.

Hence, they keep on working and grinding it out, and their net worth keeps increasing, but their liquid assets only raise a small percentage.

And chilling in a mansion in vegas is fine and dandy, but look at these people.. you make this type of a fortune by 1, staying away from vegas and 2, by constantly upgrading and keeping on the move. I would betcha that to try and get some of these people to sit still for even 2 hours would be damn near impossible.
They would go freakin nuts if they had nothing to do but lay by the pool and look at hot waitresses in bikinis... :)

That is so weird you said this. I was talking to my landlord in my pizzeria today and this guy is wealthy he owns quite a few commercial properties in manhattan and upstate and I asked him the same question about Bill Gates. What motivates him to work and make more money and he said no matter how much you have you always want more.

If i received 1 billion form each of the Walton's they would still maintain their spots on the list....

Do you think they would take me up on it?

bjfinste.....I gotta side with you on this one as I feel about the same way about this matter.....

personally I think they're more in it for the "power trip" and trying to stay at the top of the list, or in most instances, trying to get to the top of the list.....they've got more money than they'll ever need but the prestige, power, fame.....still a motivation.....

Wasn't it Garth Brooks who sorta faded from the limelight to raise his son........if I'm right I recall him saying that he had more money than his grandkids could spend, why go for more?

I guess I really like that attitude in him.....a part of me sees him being more familylike and taking care of his family, while at the same time I see he realizes the rejection of the whole ratrace when he's at the point where he doesn't need to work for more money that he obviously doesn't need......

If I had his money I'd say to hell with the ratrace also.....right now I'm working for money but if I ever get to the point where my money is working for me instead.......then I'll look into retirement and hobbies......

A friend of mine saw an article on Mike Tyson that claimed that over the course of his boxing career, with prizes and endorsements he earned about 500 million dollars, yet today he has like 5000 dollars to his name..........I'm sorta thinking at that rate that maybe he doesn't even have the 5000 anymore....If that is true, and someone told you what you just blew dollarwise....that'd just be downright flatout bottom of the barrel depressing if I went through that amount of green.....

Mike had a lifestyle to do just that, how much do you think he got screwed out of by his promoters?

How much money would these guys on that list have to bet on a game just to get nervous......if they played offshore they'd have to be in all of them and go all in just to raise thier heartbeat for 10 seconds.....

Times like these I keep thinking about that armored car worker from North Carolina who left the warehouse with like 17 million.....when his chronies transferred the money from the stretch van to thier own vehicles they had to leave behind over 3 million in the van.....then they dumped the van in some wooded industrial lot where some greenskeeper spotted it and called authorities......I'm surmising that they left behind all the small denomination notes when they realized they didn't come prepared to haul all that loot.....

Just damn wish they'd have parked it where I could have found it........I got like the other half of my life to convert and spend ones and fives......

I'll just have to settle for winning the lottery that I hardly ever play.....

That's a very good point. I suppose these people have reached this point by doing nothing but working and being innovative, so it'd probably be a real shock to the system to all of the sudden do nothing. As the professor says in Rounders, "You can't run from who you really are."

I'm with Marco... I'll just settle for winning the lottery!:)

"How much is enough?"

For these folks the money isn't the end. It is one primary measure of success, and the more money proves the more successful.

Or, it's a partial measure of your drive--Gates would do what he does if paid 100000% less.

>>>>If you're the type of person who'd retire with the first $5 mil and take it easy, then that just proves you aren't the type of person with drive to get that initial $5 mil in the first place!>>>>

sportsbettors should understand this. The units gained mean most, not your fine writeups or handicapping skill or car you drive. The regular increasing units= measure of success.

The ambiguious nature of money--that is is both a means and an end---has caused much comment and philosophizing since Aristotle.

Armand Hammer used to tell the story of how he had a party once and offered to pour a glass of $20000 wine to Buffett (who doesn't drink) "this glass of wine is worth thousands" and Warren replied "I'd rather have the money".

Gates couldn't cash in his billions anyway. He'd have to sell tons of Microsoft stock. If he did, it would drop like a rock and not pay back as much.

Forbes Mag did take most royalty off this list as thier assest are essential public property they couldn't sell.

Am I wrong, but didn't Gates have close to 100 billion at one time? At this rate, I think Buffett will soon overtake Gates for the top spot. Buffett -150 Gates +130.

I agree, how much money is enough for these folks. Now somehow I have to get enough motivation to make millions so I don't have to do a damn thing in life. ;)

You have to realize, its not as if Bill Gates makes all this money and wants to make more in terms of salary. Most if not all of his wealth is in stock. So as Microsoft stock goes up, his worth goes up, and vice versa. He was worth close to 100B when the stock was twice what it was now.

Personally, this is America. If the guy wants to make a trillion dollars, I dont give a shit. Gates has given away billions through his foundation to fight pediatric Aids, cancer and third world starvation. Hes already said he will give most of it away before he dies. Thats at least one guy thats doing it right.
