You should perform a scan every week if your surfing often.

Now remeber, there are 2 scans that you should be doing

1. perform smart scan
2. use scanning options

joe, when you open up adaware to run, you can click a "check for updates" button. I was not doing this either until my brother showed me my error yesterday. Found 45 before, updated it, then had over 250 with many of them registry keys.

Once ever couple of weeks. No adware can 'keylog your computer' or 'monitor your moves' that's just bullshit. 99% of what adaware / spybot clean up are 'tracking cookies' ONLY which simply tell advertisers that the same browser has seen 2 diffeerent ads - they have no idea who you are!!!

Adaware / spybot provide updated data files about every 3-4 months plus or minus!!!

Adaware has been updating their reference files far more frequently than every 3-4 months. Like, a couple times a week, minimum. Every time I leave it a few days then check manually for an upgrade there is a new build. Sometimes the build # is 2 or 3 higher than the previous # too.

Sixfive, when I click on "click for updates", a window comes up saying "configure or connect". I hit connect and it comes up saying
"no updated components available".
Any suggestions?
thanks!

No need to configure anything big joe. If it says "no updated components are available" then you have the most recent version.

It should read 01R263 27.02.2004 on the main screen (as of today). Next release, which will probably be in a couple of days would be 01R264 + the date it was created.

The version on my screen says 0r150 05.07.2003
This is obviously an old version, but I can't seem to upgrade.

ad-aware users, follow these instructions for a complete scan!

Configuring Ad-Aware 6 for your first scan
[NOTE: Ad-Aware 6 has two scanning options: SmartScan and Custom. As explained more fully below, SmartScan is faster, but also less comprehensive. While SmartScan is satisfactory for routine use, it is HIGHLY recommended that your FIRST scan with A-A be a Custom scan. After a thorough cleaning, use the capabilities within SmartScan for everyday use. Think of SmartScan as your regular oil change, whereas the Custom Scan is the 30,000 mile checkup.]

Ad-Aware 6 comes pre-configured with default options that are already ON (green check-mark) ... do not change them. The following are changes that you will need to make to prepare the "Full" custom scan that is recommended for the first look into your computer (instead of a red "x", you will make them a green "check-mark")
[NOTE: any options that are greyed out are only available for users of the paid Plus or Professional versions of A-A]

Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen to access the preferences/setting window.
Click the "Scanning" button.
Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
Click the "Tweaks" button.
Under "Scanning Engine", select the following:
"Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile" and "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
"Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.

When you are finished, you will be using the Custom Scan with Memory and Both registry scans ON. Please make sure that you activate IN-DEPTH scanning before you proceed.

NOTE: For the Full Scan setup instructions for users with the paid Plus or Professional versions, or if you have previously changed your settings in the Personal version, see this thread:

Dr. Strangelove is right. You have to uninstall the older version of Ad-Aware you've got, and reinstall the 6.181 engine. If you have an older version, the updated .dat files won't install.

Same kind of situation for me. I had only a few beforehand, and they were just tracking cookies.

After I got the latest file, it picked up that f'n Wild Tangent crap, something like 80-90 registry keys.

This isn't the first time Wild Tangent has overrun my PC. Thank goodness for Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D.

I wonder if some of it comes hidden in the .wmv's we run from this forum.
