Glad to hear you OK, those buggers can really cause some serious damage. Your lucky that it was just you auto that was hurt! A doe is a female, a buck would have antlers unless they have already shed them, Six five would know.

I'll be sure to look for some parts at the Geneva Car show this weekend:D

Same EXACT thing happened to me (On my birthday to boot) I saw 5 deer run across the highway and I hit one and looked in my rear view and saw it topple head over heels down the embankment. I got out and looked and could not find it. Totaled my car BTW!!!!

Now when I see the deer crossing signs, I still get edgy! Can still hear the impact sound!!!!!

The dear hurds are so over populated they need to let hunters clean it out more. On a stretch of I-90 from La Crosse Wis to Madison. Autos nail something like 4/5 a day. Thats just a 130 mile stretch of one road. You should see it when a 18 wheeler nails one. It's dam near like a explosion.
Sorry Mr 10. but good thing is you did not get hurt. Many folks get hurt bad. Dam dears fly right in there windshield.
I hope your insurance does not use this for excuse to raise your rates.

Glad you're OK Hellah. The deer here in Missouri are getting really bad. I run a golf course on the edge of town, and its nothing to see 25 to 30 at one time at night. It got so bad we had to put chicken wire around all of our young trees just to keep the deer from killing them. Not to mention the damage they do to the greens when they walk on them when the frost is still on. I used to think they were beautiful animals, now they are just giant damage causing rats.

Couple of stories from friends of mine....

One of them hit a deer, deer goes under the front end of the truck, antlers on one side broke off, deer gets stuck underneath the engine compartment with his antlers stuck between the engine and the firewall......he spends god knows how long underneath the truck trying to break off the antlers with a hammer so he can continue on.....

Other guy hit a deer with his truck, decided that he was going to get some jerky from this one, so he was going to load the deer into the back of the truck......deer too heavy, gravel road was too snowy, too slick to get his footing....so he grabbed a log chain and hooked up the deer by the antlers and the other end to the ball hitch on the truck and drove home with this deer plowing a groove in the snowfilled road.....

Would you be a redneck if you drove a pickup dragging a deer?

Very possibly so...

peng... my inlaws hit a deer on their Goldwing a few years back. My father-in-law was able to keep the bike upright someway, and they did not wreck. He said he was going 55

hellah10, you mentioned rural areas, but I'm pretty sure there are lots of deer/auto collisions in relatively urban areas now where hunting is not allowed. Some of these places are allowing archery only seasons to thin out the herds (San Antonio is one area I know).

I think that most people that don't hunt are not opposed to deer harvests to help prevent these types of problems. I think Jack has even posted about this several times in his home state of Maryland where there are a bunch of deer. Not too many died in the wool anti-hunters that don't realize this is a problem and what part of the solution is.

That's me in a nutshell. I went hunting one time in high school with friends, but I just couldn't bring myself to shoot an innocent animal standing in a field. But I'll be damned if I don't encourage those who like to hunt, to do so. I grew up in northwest Wisconsin, and the damn deer are EVERYWHERE! I've seen so many cars wrecked and people get hurt from the overpopulation... hunting is very much necessary IMO.

Kansas had 9000 and Missouri had 8000 "reported" deer/auto accidents last year. That is just two states and if you don't think that affects your auto insurance rates no matter where you live, think again.

There was a story on the local news here back in Novemeber when different cities were proposing to have a regulated deer hunts in urban areas to thin out the herds. Some group, and I use that term loosly, thought the answer was to spay and nueter the wild deer. The guy doing the story rolled his eyes and almost busted out laughing. OK, lets catch the wild animals, have a vet on the scene to perform the surgical procedure, sew them up, and have them come back in a couple weeks to have the stiches removed. This is how some people think.

Bucks should have lost their rack by now, so trying to tell the difference between bucks and does at this point would be difficult.

Glad to hear you weren't hurt as I have heard stories of people becoming paralyzed from these kind of accidents when the deer come through the windshield.
