the end of a difficult couple weeks came last night, had to put my dog Heidi down.

I have had dogs pretty much my whole life, when I was a kid, even 2 others before my accident in 86'. I' don't expect to ever see or know a dog or friend quite the same.

Heidi was a service dog, much the same as a hearing dog for the deaF, she was trained to help me in a wheelchair. Drop your keys or wallet, she would quickly grab it & drop them in your lap. Need help with a door, she could push it open. Even grab a ringing cordless phone in another room and bring it right to you.

Without a doubt a remarkable animal and friend I won't forget :(

because I'm allergic to Long hair dogs she was the first Boxer Service dog in the country, they generally train labs or Golden s because they are retrieving breeds. I got her in early July 90', hard to believe I enjoyed her help and company almost 14 years.

For those of you guys that own and enjoy dogs, appreciate your time with them, because its to short and not forever.

Best

Shamrock-Very sorry to hear that your dog/pal passed away.I went 27 years after my childhood dog died when I was 18 until I was given my current dog by my mom when she had to downsize her living situation from a house on two acres to a fifth floor Apt in a retirement home. The reason for the gap was that I couldn't stand taking my first one to the vet when she had to finally be "put to sleep".She had become like a person to me.It didn't take very long for the new one to engender a loving response from me with his constant giving of it.In an ironic twist,he acquired a rare disease last summer which made him blind,so I am now his seeing eye person. He is couragous, resilient and responds to voice commands so well that I can walk him off the leash and people can't tell he's blind unless they listen to me.Rocky knows what "stop" means, that he's coming close to walking into something. He then slows down, sniffs, and pisses on the object like he knew it was there the whole time! His sniffer is what he goes by now.He still plays with his toys, barks at the mailman, loves going for walks. It is my pleasure to do the extra things that I have to to accommodate him.His love for me makes it my honor to reciprocate,as long as he needs it.I already dread the time you are now facing, and I can only imagine what you are going through, missing that Boxer who helped and loved you so much. So sorry to hear the sad news.

Hope all is well. I had to have my black lab put down after 15 years. It was one of the hardest things to do. He went every where with me. From back and forth to work everyday to the horse races at oaklawn. A true friend and companion as I'm sure yours was. They will be sadly missed. Hope we can meet up in the afterlife.

I am very sorry for your loss. My collie is going on 12 yrs old and I think often about losing him. It will be one of the saddest days of my life. I try to think about how he has really helped me appreciate life in a simple way.

Before I had to take my dogs on walks I would have never appreciated how something so simple could give me so much joy. It doe'snt really cost anything but my time and the excitement my dogs have makes me feel really good just watching them enjoying walking and sniffing at things. It is one of the most peaceful and enjoyable moments I have.

I'm so sorry to hear that most times I like dogs better than people...

NickiD.........I have had those thoughts for years and I am glad someone else feels that way.......now I dont feel so guilty. My dogs are really my best friends.:)

i am sorry for your loss. my puppies are my best friends to.
i ended up naming my business after one of my dog's.
one of my dog's litter mates has to wheel around with a cart on his back legs because of spinal problems. for a 125 lb. german shepherd it is pretty wild. so lately i am really trying harder to enjoy everything.
some people get a puppy or dog quickly, it's a hard call.
i almost think it is better to get one just to take your mind off of the loss.
my thoughts are with you.

i hear you...you`ll laugh, but when my childhood dog died,i was unable to get another....couldn`t deal with it....

an ex girlfriend gave me a little orange kitten many years ago...i called him" benny"(top cat`s old buddy)... and after 5 years benny bit the dust....again,it devastated me...

now i have another cat,"petey"(it`s a girl...i didn`t know it was a girl..the receptionist at the vet asked for a name...petey popped into my head...then the vet walked in and said it was a girl...to late)....7 years now...was a little freezing stray that showed up on my deck one day....and nipped me(the ornery little s.o.b.).....my old lady hated cats....now the sun rises and sets with the little bugger...i`m an afterthought..

i feel your pain... must have been utter hell for you...given the circumstance,it must be unbelievably tough...

hope you are lucky enough to get another just like heidi....not that there can ever be another...i`m sure that`s how you must feel....

i feel you,bud...
