Lots of indications.

Don't know if I posted it here or told you in person, but I have long speculated that they were only waiting for Andy to graduate before making a move. When Thomas pulled the plug was on Owens after posting a 7-5 record, we knew that if Dan did not win this year he would probably be toast. I have mixed feelings on the subject as I beleve Dan is a good man, and a stand up guy. It also did not help that the Zips were pre season favorites to win the east.

But the bottom line is :

The Zips have been to the Gund once (one and done), Our MAC tourney record now stands at 1-7. He simply has not got the job done ,and has also failed to put people in the JAR, though I clearly don't blame him for that.

Still, I've met Dan and like the man. It saddens me to see him go.

University of Akron Director of Athletics Mike Thomas announced Tuesday that men's basketball coach Dan Hipsher has been relieved of his coaching duties and reassigned to a position within the University's office of public affairs and development for the remaining three years of his contract.

"Dan Hipsher has given his all to our men's basketball program, and the Zips student-athletes both on and off the court," said Thomas. "Dan was totally dedicated to his program and his efforts are greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, the team's performance is not up to the level it needs to be and it's time to move in a different direction. However, we wish nothing but the best for Dan and his family."

Thomas hopes to move quickly on finding a replacement.

Akron, which was defeated in the opening round of the Mid-American Conference tournament for the second-straight season Monday, compiled a 13-15 overall record and was 7-11 in league play this past season after going 14-14, 9-9 MAC last season.

Hipsher came to Akron in March 1995 and took over an ailing program. In his first three years on the job the program made marked improvement, going 3-23 in 1995-96, 8-18 in 1996-97 and 17-10 in 1997-98. That 17-win season earned him the MAC Coach-of-the-Year and the Columbus Dispatch Ohio Coach-of-the-Year awards. UA was also MAC East Division champion that season. In 1998-99 he led the team to an 18-9 mark and again reached the 17-win mark in 1999-2000, going 17-11.

The program was 12-16 in 2000-01 and 10-21 in 2001-02 - advancing to the MAC tournament quarterfinal round that season.

In his nine seasons at Akron, Hipsher compiled a 112-137 record, including a 72-90 mark in MAC play. He was also 1-7 in MAC postseason competition. In 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach he is 238-182, having been head coach at Wittenberg (four seasons/1989-93) and Stetson (two seasons/1993-95).

Media Note: Director of Athletics Mike Thomas will handle media requests between 4 and 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Media members should contact Assistant Director of Media Relations Gregg Bach (330-972-6106/330-760-0522 cell) to coordinate a time. Requests for Dan Hipsher should also be handled through Bach.

Spang is exactly right Hipsher is a nice guy but it was time to get him out of there. The Zips have had a boatload of talent during his regime and have laid a egg come conf tourney time. I think the Zips need to get a young guy in there that has inner city connections, the campus is like CSU (concrete) and is a tough sell to grade A+ players.
