DETROIT -- Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek has refused to accept about $3 million of his salary because he is out with a groin injury.

Hasek, who announced Feb. 10 that he would miss the remainder of the season with the injury, has not accepted pay since Jan. 9, general manager Ken Holland said Friday.

Hasek

That was the day Hasek and the team agreed the goaltender should rest the injured groin for two to four weeks.

Hasek tested out the groin in early February, but later said he could no longer play this season. The nagging groin injury has limited him to 14 games since he came out of a one-year retirement.

"He just felt that he wasn't doing what he really had set out to do, which is to play hockey and play at a high level," Holland said. "At that time, he told me that he did not want to receive any further salary until he was ready to play."

By Jan. 9, Hasek had received a little more than $3 million of his $6 million salary for the season.

"I think it's an unbelievable gesture," Holland said.

One of the NHL's greatest goalies, Hasek won two MVP awards and six Vezina Trophies, given to the league's top goalie, during a nine-year stint in Buffalo. He also led the Czech Republic to a gold medal in the 1998 Nagano Olympics.

i think about 99% of the players wouldn't do that. The last person I heard to do something like that was Bob Knight when he gave back $250,000 for Texas Tech being so bad...

Much respect to the Dominator. Two players I feel that should repay their teams should be Grant Hill & Alonzo Mourning. Hill is still spedning time on the pine recovering from his injury. And Zo collected all that money from the Heat while they stood by him during his kidney ailment. He could have been a class act and played for the minimum when his contract ended but instead went for more money and signed I believe a guaranteed contract with the Nets.

It is a great gesture on Haseks part. But let`s not get carried away here. He`s probably a millionaire and it`s no big deal. But when a player signs a contract, and gets injured in the line of duty, the team should damn well have to pay him. What about Moore of Colorado? Should he say he won`t collect his pay till he can play again? There are lots of players out for good parts of the season in all major sports, and to suggest or expect them to not take their pay is bloody ridiculous IMO.:nono:

It is ridiculous, but it happens all of the time, whether they are millionaires or not. They all become greedy bastards. Folks should consider what they are actually doing for their compensation, but reality is atheletes are all about gettting everything they can while they can. That's the reaon I posted it. It shouldn't be such an oddity, but it is.
