With the NCAA Tournament only days away, the status of two key Murray State basketball players ? Adam Chiles and Kelvin Brown ? is uncertain following drug-related arrests over the weekend.
Chiles and Brown were arrested Saturday afternoon for misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to a Murray police spokesman.
Yesterday coach Mick Cronin said a decision on their availability for Friday's first-round game against Illinois in Columbus, Ohio, had not been reached.
When asked if Chiles and Brown would play, Cronin said, "that remains to be seen" and declined further comment.
Murray spokesman Steve Parker said a decision regarding their status likely would be a joint effort among school President F. King Alexander, athletic director E.W. Dennison and Cronin.
"Nothing has changed as of today," Parker said yesterday. "There might be a decision tomorrow."
Chiles leads the Racers in assists (4.6 per game) and is their fifth-leading scorer (10.2). Brown, a junior forward who has been coming off the bench lately, is second on the team in scoring (12.7 points).
Alexander could not be reached for comment. Dennison did not return a phone message. Chiles and Brown did not return a message left for them through Parker.
According to Capt. Eddie Rollins of the Murray police department, officers were dispatched to Chiles' off-campus apartment as part of a routine procedure following a 911 call and hang-up. Upon arrival, the officers spoke with Chiles asking if he was OK and asking permission to enter, Rollins said.
Rollins said Brown was found hiding in a closet in the back bedroom.
"It was discovered that there was an arrest warrant out for Mr. Brown,'' he said. "There also was found what was suspected to be a small amount of marijuana."
Rollins said the arrest warrant for Brown was for allegedly driving away from a Shell gas station in town without paying for gas Wednesday. The officers obtained a search warrant and found drug paraphernalia and arrested Brown and Chiles.
Brown was charged with drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia (a second offense). Chiles was charged with hindering prosecution, drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. They were taken to Calloway County Jail
Julie Robertson, a Calloway County Jail administrative assistant, said Chiles and Brown spent 2 1/2 hours there before each posted bond of $500. She said an arraignment has been set for April 19 at Calloway Country District Court.
This is the second time this season Brown has gotten into trouble. He served a two-game suspension in February for what Cronin described as a violation of team rules.
Chiles, a former Ballard High School star, is a junior guard who was dismissed from the University of Kentucky's team after his freshman season.
If Chiles or Brown is unable to play, it would be a serious blow to Murray's tournament chances. The No.12-seeded Racers (28-5) will play No.5 Illinois (24-6), the regular-season Big Ten champion. Chiles was the team's starting point guard before a dislocated shoulder injury forced him into a reserve role during the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
"Part of life is handling adversity, whether it's an illness in the family or losing your job," Cronin said. " Fortunately we're a senior-laden team. I can't stress enough what great leaders we have in Antione Whelchel and Chris Shumate. They've been able to guide this team. I would expect nothing less of them this week."
