Things are different for everyone. Personally, my best sport by far is the NBA. I've been betting it regularly for a lot of years and have had very good success. On the other hand, so as not to come across as some know-it-all, I freely admit that I cannot beat a sport like baseball. Some say this is the easiest sport to beat, but clearly not for me. So, I just stopped betting it.
Again, while things are different for everyone, my experience suggests that February and March are the most difficult months to beat the NBA for a number of reasons:
1. Some teams have quit. Individual players on some of these teams still try to pad their stats but play no defense. Chicago and Orlando are two examples. Despite this, every so often, a game pops up that defies all logic -- Orlando almost winning at LA last night for example. Although, this sort of thing can happen at anytime during the season, I find that it's more prevalent this time of year.
2. Injuries. All teams are banged up now. Which teams are banged up the most is hard to tell. Look at the number of players questionable every day. It's anybody's guess who might sit on a given day.
3. Oddsmaking. By now, oddsmakers have easily caught up. What was working earlier in the season quite possibly isn't working now because there's much less value in most of the lines (IMO). Yet, it's human nature for handicappers to continue using the methods that have worked for them up until this point.
4. Capper burnout. Although we probably don't like to admit it, are we really putting in as much time on a game as we did earlier in the season? When a new season starts, we're all fresh and gungho to get off to a good start. But let's face it -- this daily grind day in, day out takes its toll on cappers. It's a long season. I know I'm certainly guilty of being more likely to take shortcuts this time of year. Just something to think about.
It's taken me a number of stubborn years to accept all of the above (and more). But when I look back at my records (and I hope everyone keeps accurate records), I find that I have so much more success November-January and struggle in February-March before enjoying successful playoff seasons. This season I've decided to take it easy in Feb/March, playing very little right now until the playoffs. Mostly, I'm just playing middles, especially with 2nd half totals as there are numerous +EV opportunities using some of the reduced vig shops. I still follow the game closely and track a number of stats (see my posts on 1st half/2nd half data for example), but much of this is for future reference.
Again, everyone is different and I certainly tip my cap to those who do have success this time of year -- always looking for other perspectives and insight.
