some of you guys are watering down the list of some of the

greatest movie characters of all time. they are good characters

but will not stand the test of time.

this list cannot be complete without listing:

the james cagney character in the movie "white heat", where he plays a deranged gangster who goes nuts whenever somebody mentions anything about his mother. this character also smashes a grapefruit in his girlfriends face.

the kathy bates character in "misery"

edward g. robinson character in "little caesar"

jack nicholson character in the movie (forgot the name) where he gets cabin fever while staying in a hotel with his family during the winter. he utters the famous words:"here's johnny", when he trying to hack his wife to death.

i think you can go back to some old guys that basically shaped a particular character that would recur over and over and endure....

they may be a little long in the tooth for most of us on this board, but they stood the test of time and shaped future portrayals of the character..

like basil rathbone`s sherlock holmes.....he,as much as doyle`s book, set the mold for what would be dozens of holmes` to follow.....

and bela lugosi`s "dracula" .....shaped the bram stoker character that has been copied over and over...

if lugosi had played dracula in a pin stripe suit and fedora, would that be what we`d see in movie after movie?....probably...

a nice topic...everybody has their faves...good stuff..
