Speeding Ticket

Last Friday I was headed south on I85 from Atlanta to Montgomery for the weekend, as I was passing through Union City I was pulled over for going 84 in a 65. Ouch!

There were several cars on the road and I was the rear car in a bunch of six. One policeman was lasering me and radioed another policeman to pull me over. Then only thing I said to the policeman was "Can I see the laser". (my thought was this is not the one that pulled me over so he could not confirm my speed - let me go). I was told "its not your right to see the laser".

I have the laser serial number and calibration/chech numbers also. MY question is this does anyone know a good way out of this - Or can anyone point me in the direction of a somewhere I can check the calibration number to make sure it good.
Any help is greatly apprecated

Well if you weren't speeding I would say you are still screwed, not sure about it not being your right to see the laser. I would definatly fight it, majority of the time the cop will not show up for the hearing, they just don't have the time in their schedule and usually won't come on their own time. I have been told that some places schedule hearing time for officers and it's always the same time every week so ask for the hearing to be rescheduled for another day, make up an excuse for not being able to attend that day of the week.

Tell em you thought in this country you have the right to confront your accuser (the laser) and were denied that right and have sought the legal advice of a guy named Eddie Haskell, you will walk.......or be hung on the spot, either way you won't pay the ticket:D

I have a guy that works for me....he got a ticket.....somehow he deliberately screwed up his speedometer..took it to a shop to get it looked at and paid the guy like 20 bucks to get back to the right timing.....He then took that documentation to the court and he got out of it.....at least that was his story.

What you are about to read is long and will probably make your eyes bleed. But it has saved my ass on several occassions.

If you have no experience in dealing with speeding cases (court room) may I suggest you seek a speeding ticket specialist

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I'll have more time after my last exam tonight

make sure you read the entire case...

With reference to your rights to see the laser, I have no idea. I do however, have serious concerns about your statement that you were heading from Atlanta to Montgomery for the weekend?

Worst case.. in most states, if you go to court, plead guilty, and ask for traffic school.. Then you pay a smaller fee for the class, which gets you a discount on your insurance it voids the ticket and it never shows up on your record.

Done it a few different time and everytime by the way the cop did show up in court..

Good Luck!

Not sure if this will help...

A few years ago, I got caught doing 55 in a 45 m.p.h zone at the Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. It was 2:00 A.M. and no one was on the 5-lane highway but me. Like I was really endangering someone's life. Haha... Anyway, cop gave me a ticket for speeding. My girlfriend's sister works as a paralegal assistant. She set up a trial date for me to show up in court. It's like someone said earlier from above. My lawyer set up a date that he pretty much knew the cop who wrote the ticket wouldn't show. Sure enough. Cop didn't show. I got off. No record. Nothing.

Of course if you hired a lawyer, it will cost you probably 80 bucks or so. Or you can take your chance and show up in court by yourself and hope the guy who wrote you the ticket won't show.

Good luck.

plea not guilty, go to court by yourself. Accept to pay the fine and court cost and the judge will rid the ticket, no points or insurance rate gouging;)

a myth i have heard: pay $5 over the amount of fine via mail. Example: $110 ticket - pay $115. They will send you a $5 refund check. never cash the check and the offense gets left in the unfinished file, an inclompete transaction and never processed, good nite;)

Gatorbait,

Total myth with the refund check thing. I tried it in college, and they even kept my $5:mad: It was worth a shot though....I guess.

I got a ticket last week in my hometown of pendleton indiana :cuss: , was crusing a little fast 60 in a 30 is what the cop said, I hadn't really paid attention. I thought I wasn't going that fast because I had a car in front of me and a stop sign coming up

I was doing some reasearch on this and found some info here:

ticketkiller free advice

does anyone know how I can get this info mentioned like the speed studies? :gf:

Doc,

What was so special about this case. Was it that the officer did not properly test the radar?

I can't imagine anyone spending legal fees to fight a speeding ticket. Don't see how it would be worth it unless you had a terrible driving record and were in jeopardy of losing your license or some consequence of auto insurance.

I've gotten my fair share so this has been my experience. First off, because of the amount you were over the speed limit (19), chances are if you go to court they will knock it down to the lowest level. In the best case scenario, they will remove the ticket and have you pay the fine and court costs. (all they want is the damn money anyways). Some states (NC does) lets you use "prayer for judgement". It's basicaly like you are telling the judge it won't happen again...i've been told if you then get another ticket w/in 2 years you get the first one as well. I used this in NC and got out of a ticket. Otherwise, you can ask for the traffic school (i did this as well, it's the most boring 4 hours of your life and will run 150$ but will save you the insurance markup. Or you can try a lawyer that specializes in that area for traffic tickets. That too many run you a few hundred but is worth it.

I myself got a ticket for 80 in a 60 on my way up for Thanksgiving in Virginia. Those virginia cops are a bunch of cocksuckers I'll tell you that much. It's a 150 mile trek from where I live so I'll prob try to find a local lawyer to sort it out for me.

And finally, some states aren't reciprocal with the state you live in. You may just have to pay the fine without your insurance company being contacted. I got one in WV and payed it and my ins company was never contacted.

Good luck with it let us know which route you go.
