Is Eli going to the Chargers or Giants? Has anybody heard if the Chargers are going to trade the pick?

Archie Manning doesn't want Chargers to draft son Eli
April 22, 2004
SportsLine.com wire reports

SAN DIEGO -- Archie Manning doesn't want his son, top quarterback prospect Eli, to be taken by the San Diego Chargers with the first pick of the NFL Draft.

General manager A.J. Smith said Wednesday night that Eli Manning's agent, Tom Condon, relayed Archie Manning's concerns during a phone call.

Condon also said Archie Manning feels the New York Giants would be a better fit for his son, Smith said.

"We understand, but we'll do what's in the best interests of the San Diego Chargers," Smith said.

Condon has not returned phone calls for several days.

The Giants, who have the fourth pick, are one of three teams who have talked to the Chargers about trading for the No. 1 pick.

Archie Manning visited the Chargers on Tuesday, but Smith said he did not express concerns about the franchise, which has missed the playoffs for the past eight seasons. The Chargers are 43-85 since making their last postseason appearance, in 1995.

Smith said the elder Manning was in town on business and stopped by to visit because he was unable to attend a private workout the team had with Eli Manning in New Orleans a few weeks ago.

Archie Manning was an outstanding player stuck on a dismal team, the New Orleans Saints. Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts is also Archie's son and was the first overall pick in 1998. At the time, the Colts were a struggling franchise, too.

Condon also represents Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who as a rookie in 2001 missed all but five days of training camp during a contract holdout.

Can someone please explain to me how drafting Eli Manning helps an immediate need for the New York Giants?

Vegas Dave,
I agree with your assessment. Sure Collins will be a FA after next year but so what. I can assure you that the book will still be out on Eli at that time. Who knows, maybe he will progress as Peyton has, I just have my doubts. I think the NYG are just trying to make a splash. I still question the hiring of Coughlin. Sure I know he had success at Jax, but don't forget the salary cap benefits and draft compensations they received as an expansion team. Hell it's hard to miss when you get 6 picks in the first 3 rounds for two years or whatever it was. Then when cap times got tough, the organization has the balls to ask the league for exemptions. Go figure.

i think that the giants are thinking that they may not get to be in this type of position in the draft too often. so they feel they should take advantage of the situation while they can.

the giants will not win a championship with collins at qb. good defenses intimidate him , ie-balt (superbowl), phil., etc.

accorsi belives that the qb position is the most important position in football & he likes to have a strong qb at the helm. over the years he has played a part of getting unitas at balt., kosar at cleve., elway at indy. elway was traded to denver, by the owner behind accorsi's back.he feels manning will be his legacy at n.y. & the giants will not have to worry about the qb position for the next 10 years.

i have been following the giants since the 1960's & i think fassell, while seeming to be a nice guy, was not a good head coach, imo. fassell was a coach who wanted to be well liked by the players & they lacked discipline. under fassell, the giants committed too many errors, ie-not doing anything about tiki's constant fumbling, & penalties. for years he did nothing about the poor special teams play.

the giants blowing that playoff game vs, the 49ers a few years ago was an indication of the type of head coach fassell was. they not only lost a big lead, but were penalized numerous times for losing their cool in that game, & couldn't even get a fg off in time.

imo, tom coughlin is the type of coach the giants need. he will not accept players showing up late for team meetings, as fassell did. he will not put up with tiki's fumbling (lack of concentration), he will not tolerate the constant poor special teams play. and most of all he will eliminate the country club atmosphere in the giants locker room. and i do think coughlin is a very good coach. not only did he help jax. establish itself, he took a boston college football team that consistently performed poorly before he arrived & built a winning atmosphere there.

You still have to wonder about the manner in which the Jags under Coughlin choked in some very big games...........championship game twice and especially the one at home against Tennessee...........

AR182,
I did not mean to be bashing up so much on Coughlin. I agree that Fossil needed to go and the Coughlin type of a no nonsense appraoch can only be a start in the right direction. In the NFL, some career guys are better fits for coordinator postions than HC positions which has been proven. IMO, Fossil sure fits that mode. He's a hell of an X's and O's type of guy. Coughlin will demand respect and discipline and will demand that his team play hard. I just have my doubts if he can get a team to that next level. But by me being a Dallas Cowboy homer, I'm delighted that the NYG have hired Coughlin. I do know that Parcells has tremendous respect for Coughlin so that says something for him. I do hope that they can trade up and nab Eli as I would hate to see him go to SD. Schottenhiemer is the worst.
