Bank ATMs Converted to Steal IDs of Bank Customers

A team of organized criminals is installing equipment on legitimate bank ATMs in at least 2 regions to steal both the ATM card number and the PIN. The team sits nearby in a car receiving the information transmitted wirelessly over weekends and evenings from equipment they install on the front of the ATM (see photos). If you see an attachment like this, do not use the ATM and report it immediately to the bank using the 800 number or phone on the front of the ATM.

The equipment used to capture your ATM card number and PIN is cleverly disguised to look like normal ATM equipment. A "skimmer" is mounted to the front of the normal ATM card slot that reads the ATM card number and transmits it to the criminals sitting in a nearby car.

At the same time, a wireless camera is disguised to look like a leaflet holder and is mounted in a position to view ATM PIN entries.

The thieves copy the cards and use the PIN numbers to withdraw thousands from many accounts in a very short time directly from the bank ATM.

Try to find the actual story at The University of Texas at Austin, Police Department. They have pictures of the actual items being used in the scam. But Mongo too stupid to know how to post them.:D

There was actually a special on Dateline about these scammers using ATM machines to carbon copy your pin number. They would actually buy ATM machines for about 2K and set up the fraud anywhere they felt needed for quick scamming. Apparently, anyone can do it with the right kind of cash and technology. They showed guys who were caught who made out with over a million dollars in less than a year...Prior to being caught, that is...

Going back to the hoax site, it didn't say weather it was true or not. I guess it's true if the info came from a police website.

Almost all the way down at the bottom under TRUE LEGENDS. Last one on the bottom right.

I wasn't sure either although I got that same email about 2 months ago and sent it to everyone on my list.

Chop....I saw a show like the Dateline one about the ATM thing.....one other thing they do is sabotage the machine so it traps your card, then sit back and spy the keypad to try to get your pin number......most people can't get thier card back, but the thief retracts the card with a needlenose pliers or foreceps and uses the card himself......

I don't think I could leave an ATM knowing that my card was stuck there....

Best one I ever heard of was in one of the two books Frank Abignale wrote......he was the character that the movie "Catch Me if You Can" was based on.....it was left out of the movie, but one of the scams in his book was a sign he placed on a night deposit box stating that the deposit box was out of order and in need of repairs, that customers should please leave deposit with the guard in the room.....ballsy.....he even bought a guard suit identical to the ones the real security company there used, and as he was leaving, rolling a cart full of deposit bags down the sidewalk, two police officers helped him roll it......

......later on at the motel room he separated the cash and left the coins and the checks in the bathtub, and called the bank leaving a message as to the whereabouts of the coins and checks....

....claimed his haul for that one was like 87,000.....

.....good movie but I felt the books were better....could hardly put the books down....
