Internet Fraud: Fraudulent Email: eBay Account Verification

I received this email over the weekend. The "from" address was "spoofed" so that it appeared to be from aw-confirm@ebay.com, which I know to be a valid email address that eBay uses quite frequently to send certain auction notices. It looked very authentic as well.

This email informed me that my eBay account was going to be suspended because they suspected I had faked some information or used someone else's information. The gist of it was that I had to enter my user name, email address, password, address, phone number, and credit card information to prove the account was really mine and the form to do all this was right in the email message.

I thought it was very funny that the form was actually in the email message, so I sent the email to "spam@ebay.com", asking whether or not it was real. It was, of course, a fake. Remember, eBay will NEVER ask you for your password or ANY personal information in an email, so don't be fooled! If you think an email is fraudulent, DON'T submit any of your information and DO forward the message to "spam@ebay.com". They'll let you know whether or not it is real.

Here's the text of the message:

Dear Valued eBay Member,

We regret to inform you that your eBay account will be suspended within 48 hours due to the violation of our site policy below:

* Misrepresentation of Identity (User) - Representing yourself as another eBay user or registering using the identity of another.

Due to the suspension of this account, please be advised you are prohibited from using eBay in any way. This includes the registering of a new account.

Please note that this suspension does not relieve you of your agreed-upon obligation to pay any fees you may owe to eBay.

According to our site policy you will have to confirm that you are the real owner of the eBay account by completing the following form or else your account will be deleted.

All fields below are required. Please double check before you Submit

my mom has received several of these exact emails or ones similar. Another thing to remember about ebay and paypal is this. They have the shittiest customer service of probably any organization on the face of the planet. They are never looking out for your best interests, and they will never, ever send you an email that might in some way help you or alert u to a fraud taking place against you.
