I bought a new system today and as usual the Best Buy salesman tried to upsell everything in the store. One thing that I did not know about are Automatic Voltage Regulators. I have never had any spike or surge problems but after reading a bit about them online, I would like to know if anyone uses and/or recommends that I get one or if just a standard surge suppressor with a medium to high joule rating is more than sufficient.

Cheers,
M

UPS would be better I think, prices are way down from what they were. It will help with spikes and outages, BUT, it also depends on what you have to protect. If I were a doctor or lawyer and kept my client files on my computer, then I would probably opt for extra protection. Most commercial insurance policies dont cover loss of data and the cost to recover it from computers. (you can keep office account files backed up anyway and keep a copy of the disk at home and one in the office just in case anyway) However for most home PC's, just using a regular surge protector is good enough. Most people never need anything more to protect it.

Thanks KMA...yes, it's just for a home system. I figured I was just being hustled but wanted to check it out.

Thanks again,
M
