A tough call

Last year the Carolina Panthers were #2 in defense from the previous year.

This year the Bills were #2 in defense.

Similarity????

Bledsoe has always been an every-other-year QB. This could be his year.

The Patriots have the schedule of the #1 team -- tough.
The Dolphins have O & D cordinator problems.
the Jets are floundering.
The Bills have a descent schedule.

All that means nothing except the odds
The Bills are 20:1 to win the AFC
and 45:1 to win the Super Bowl.

Go with the odds for a long shot
The Bills have a very good defense (but losing D Coord phillips will hurt)
The offense has a good O line, a good WR, very good RBs, and a potentially great QB.

An early guess, but great odds.

Well the Buffalo Bill's idea last year was to keep their potent offense, and add a couple of key free agents in Takeo Spikes, Sam Adams, and Lawyer Milloy.

Well the scales tipped the other way meaning the defense sky-rocketed to the 2-spot, and the offense fell on its face.

For the Bills to be successful they will need either Lee Evans to mass produce immediately, or Josh Reed to wake up and smell the coffee. The offensive line is fine, but if Bledsoe can't find any receivers open and swallows the ball on each play this team is going no where. A productive tight-end could help this offense out a lot.

As for the defense, this is the typical 'lack of offense makes the defense looks good' trick. For about a month last season, opposing teams only needed to score a single touchdown to beat the Bills and that had a huge bearing on their defensive statistics. The Bills defense is good, but a lack of a consistent pass-rush will puncture this team. In my opinion, defensive end was a bigger concern than WR for this team, and they didn't pick one up.

You can't have it all, but this team is close. Drew Bledsoe still can be a top 5 passer in this league when everything goes right, but Lee Evans has to step in and replace Peerless Price. Another injury to Eric Moulds and Buffalo will be praying for 7 wins.

great post vegas dave. ur right if lee eveans can have a big year in his 1st year as a bill, that will open things for moulds and honestly believe josh reed. they also have done a good job in bringing in new coaches, this wont be the team of last year, but alot better and think more disciplined. nothing wrong w/bledsoe, i blame gilbride and company for drews poor year, rememebr hes not calling the plays. why the hell did they bring in sam gash last yr, to throw the ball  , totally rediculous.defense wins football games and think this team will have a good shot. as the yesar goes on it wouldnt surprise me to se the bills deal either travis or mcgahee for a number 1 next year since they dont have one. would rather see mcgahee go 1st though, as i am a big henry backer

Remember that name; a plague, scourge and disaster for any QB

--- KEVIN GILBRIDE ---

The one Buddy Ryan punched on the sideline on TV years ago.

Just getting rid of Gilbride is worth not only several more wins, but more confidence for the whole offense. I am not sure if a team can recover from Gilbride at least for a few years.
He has bounced around lately, and left shattered teams. Look what he has done to teams like San Diego and Pittsburgh. He is a walking time bomb (game time).

I have been watching this for several years, but I never had truely believed. Now I believe!!! He single-handedly has destroyed franchises.

His system and ideas just dont work, and never will.

NOW he is a coach of the New York Giants. Probably a QB coach at least. Eli Manning is screwed.

And on top of Gregg Williams and Kevin Gilbride going, Mike Mularkey stepping in is huge. He's worked magical offensive schemes for Kordell Stewart, and even helped Tommy Maddox excel in Pittsburgh so he should be able to open up this offense.

As far as I know (I'm about 90% sure of this), but isn't the common thought that rookie Wide Receivers take the longest to develop and most don't produce very much in their first year at all?

I believe that Willis McGahee will be the back of the future even though Travis Henry has proven himself to be a top-tier running back. He had a 1500+ yard season, he's played through a broken foot, and plays for less than a million per season, what more do you want from the guy? This is the exact point that I bring up at the NFL draft every year. Draft a player who you need right now, not the best talent available. Had the Bills got their hands on an impact DE last year instead of McGahee, then they would be a real concern in the AFC. Instead they are stuck with 2 RB's, and hoping that Chris Kelsey and Aaron Schobel can get to the Quarterback.

P.S. Not surprised about Kevin Gilbride, he used to do very poor analysis for Sportsnet up in Canada (similar to Fox Sportsnet, but like I said its Canadian). If he got a job, then it might not be long before Chris Schultz is a head coach too.
