djv, you misunderstood my post if you think i meant that anyone but you should decide what kind of gun you keep at home. i meant that a four or four and a half foot long shotgun can be unwieldy inside a house at night, in the dark, with furniture, doors and the like in the way. also, if someone gets closer to you than you would prefer you will have difficulty using a full sized shotgun.

the idea of gun registration is pretty fruitless imo, as i'm going to take an educated guess and venture that none of the criminals in possession of guns are going to come forward to register their guns. my state has a fairly workable law that requires prospective gun owners to apply to the local sheriff for a permit to purchase a handgun. after the sherif does a criminal backround check, as well as a check for prior commitment history, the prospective gun buyer is given a permit that must be presented to the seller at time of purchase. i see no useful purpose in requiring law abiding citizens to inventory all of their guns to the government.

i do agree with you that there is no chance that the us congress is going to pass any law that would prohibit the private ownership of guns. such a law would probably be unconstitutional, not to mention the fact that sponsorship of such a bill would be akin to political suicide.

you do practice with that shotgun on a regular basis, including getting to it at night and going from room to room in such a way as to not risk losing possession of it, right?
