Not sure who should have been at whoms funeral--but more importantly to me is knowing Canada has always been there when we needed them and visa versa. While we see many poltical squabbles to and fro, they are no worse than internal squabbles in each country from respective parties.
Knowing when the shit hits the fan each country will be there for the other is the bottom line in my view.

Now france is a different story:)

Great way to put it. Regardless of the little spats over trade and tarrifs each country knows the other would be there for them.

kick, it is just protocol that the sitting government be represented and martin did not send anyone.

Mulroney was there has a former head of state and a very close friend of the Reagan's, he was not representing Canada or it's current administration.

Martin not being there was a direct slap in the face just like france and is not right coming from such a close ally as Canada.

Besides the US no other nation has more soldiers in Afganistan. It is closer to 2000 than 20 and that will be the case probably until the year 2006 if not longer. Where did you get your 20 cdn. soldiers from.......

Typical American snob, a US President dies and the PM during his reign shows up, but yet you want more. And in turn, Trudeau dies and 99% of Americans don't even know who he is. Newsflash.............world doesn't revolve around the USA

Again, why should we know who he is

kick,

I do think though that Paul Martin should have been there. Granted, the US pres wasn't at Trudeau's funeral, look at what the US has done for us. Our true ally and long time friend. If we were to be attacked by another country, who do you think would be the 1st country to step up?

Remember, times like this one must think outside the box.

look at the BIG picture

You should take note of a wise man's comments.

How many Americans even knew Trudeau died......or who he was

I'm still struggling with this. Why should I know who he is  What did he do to make him worthy of worldwide praise

Dont know why anyones bitchen. We dont send our Prez all the time either. We send the VP to many. Lets be alittel real about this. Reagan was out of office for over 16 years. I wish we had a rule all state funeral are only for those who die while in office.
We started the week he was good. Then he became great. Now there talking Mt Rushmore. Give me a break. Historians rate him 8 or 9 best. That is from a panel of 6 historians. 2 indys, 2 dems 2 Reb. Another panel that was totaly nuts rated him 20th. I believe the 8th spot is about right. And Canada I believe sent two representatives.

The whole week reminded me of the Living Color song "Cult of Personality." People cried at Stalin's funeral. Get a grip people.

Thanks ctown. Actually was too young to care then. If I am not mistaken, the controllers had broken an agreement which forbid them from walking out. Don't remember.

See the "ok, this will probably piss off..." thread. Canada sent Governor General Adrienne Clarkson to the funeral. If you want to be super-technical about the order of hierarchy in Canada, it goes:

1) The Queen
2) The Governor General
3) The Prime Minister

Where the Queen was, I don't know ;) (I do know I saw Prince Charles was there). But in any event, you got a higher-ranking official there than our PM!

Also, when Reagan was in power Paul Martin I don't believe was even in politics. Mulroney on the other hand had a very close working relationship with Reagan, as well as a personal friendship that lasted beyond the time when both were in office. So it only makes sense that Mulroney would be the most-visible Canadian at the funeral and the one to speak.

Unaware of just how close Reagan was to dying, Mulroney just happened to call the Reagans on the day he died to see how he was doing, and Nancy Reagan told him that she felt Ron's death was imminent. Half an hour later he died.
