Kansas City area for who knows how long....
in no particular order

in no particular order

"South: Shackleton & the Endurance" (2000)

Film incorporates the beautiful haunting images caught by Hurley on Shackelton's ill-starred expedition to Antartica (1914) and the ship held fast by ice 10 months and crushed by the pressure. Terrific telling then of Shackelton's incredible journey across hundreds of miles of sea by small boat (and land also) to rescue all his men.

"Jazz on a Summer's Day " (1958)

film is like great moving still photos of Mahalia Jackson in her prime, with Louis Armstrong and company.

" The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On"

1987 film by Hara follows a slighly crazy old Japanese private around as he confronts guys who participated in atrocities with him in WW2 and one wild scene he actually attacks an old dude and literally beats a confession of cannibalism out of him!

"The Sorrow and the Pity"

1971 film about the French during Nazi occupation, and much of it not pretty. Great director Marcel Ophuls mixes searching interviews with old footage, but presents the complexities that don't have such easy answers.

That LBJ documentary on who killed Kennedy.

that one really had impact on me as I feel it finally gave up
the truth.

hate reality shows but enjoy watching documentaries.

sorry for any lack of details, have most on tape but have not watched these in a year +.

1. The collector was a big hit at Sundance in 2002 or 2001? about a person and the people who collect records...vinyl.
I mean 40,000 albums and up, some people who have seen this say it is the sadest film ever. however there are some very funny moments, funny and sad makes you think....great film.

2. the salesmen
this is by the two brother who made docs, in the 1960s. this is about bible salesmen in the 1960s. more about the art of selling and through the life of these travelling salesmen. great film. if you ever sold anything have to watch this.

3. Rolling Stones this doc is by the same two brothers about a free concert the stones gave in the 1960s where someone gets stabbed. they say it was the first and maybe last behind the scences music film, (that was more than a 90 minute comercial of the band or latest album).

4. 1984 CAW strike called last offer?? this film deals with GM and Canadian auto workers and from this strike the birth of the CAW. a good film on labour negotiations. note: there are words in here I still do not know what they mean.....harsh language...

5. Edmond Fiztergerald not sure of the title but this was about the boat that meant its end in the 1970s during a terrible storm in 1970s. just a well done film on a budget. that gives you a feel for the crews life and the tradgey.

6. Sahara ...okay not sure about the title about a man who crosses the desert on foot. your odds of doing this and living are not good. he made it just got stabbed once. tried the second time for another film and died. you see this film and you remeber parts for weeks....maybe months.... a look at life and death...madness in the desert.

7. cosmos a greek diner in Montreal. funny and still cannot believe how much some people can eat..... home made food with a bit of grease. funny when cosmos comes up to a customer telling not to eat there everyday it will kill him.

8. Nazis a warning from history.
this is a six hour (six part ) film one documentary of the year in 1999. powerful and scary...

9. military blunders
some are funny and sad, very well done, not as good as 8.

10. battlefield
if you want to know about a battle in WW2, this one tells you about it, do not have it on tape cannot find it....well done.

11. 12 two films on Eboli, cdn. producer, based a hollywood movie on one, never gave her credit. first one is the best, second deals with a breakout in Africa kills 15,000-50,000.

the first is when they believe an airborne strain was in the US in SF, in 1987. scary and at times funny. the end has a docter fly fishing and talking about life and the dieasease. could have made a film on him as well. great film.

thanks

I dont know if this fits into this category

I have this one still on tape though it is the one where the journalists are doing a story on a Fire Dept in New York City on 9/11.

They just happened to be doing a story on life inside the fire house when the alarms went off. They showed all the footage from insde the towers after the planes hit.

"The Anderson Platoon"...documenatry came out in 1967 or '68.About the a platoon of soldiers in Vietnam doing search and sizures in the jungle.I remember it was in black and white and Lt Anderson was a black Lt. that graduated from West Point. It wasn't a political movie. It was about the platoon and Lt Anderson and what they went through every day.
I was 16 or 17 and the war was at its height. It was real footage not staged.I remember Lt Anderson cared about his soldiers and when his sargents questioned him he listened to their arguements and I believe changed his original assignment.
Also remember at the end Lt Anderson leaves and a new Lt comes in.Right away he's different and no one likes him.The first time they go out searching he changes how the pt man runs the pt.Everyone feels it puts the pt at risk as if to draw fire so they can get some kills.I remember sargents talking back to the new Lt.Kinda like the movie "Platoon" which came out 30 yrs later.
Docu.. had an impact on me as a young kid.I think it won an acadamy award or emmy.
