Burnett added to Pirates' rotation
Pirates' shakeup puts Vogelsong in bullpen

CINCINNATI -- When Sean Burnett left Nashville to make an emergency start eight days ago, manager Trent Jewett told him to make the most of the opportunity because "you never know what can happen."

Something happened yesterday. The Pirates announced a shakeup of their starting rotation, and Burnett claimed a spot. He will pitch Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Ryan Vogelsong (2-7) has been moved to the bullpen.

"I looked at it as a do-or-die situation. I didn't have anything to lose," said Burnett, a rookie left-hander who has made a positive impression despite losing in starts against the Mariners and the Astros.

Burnett had been "walking on eggshells" and didn't know until yesterday whether he would be shipped back to the minors. Burnett gave the organization little choice but to keep him around with the way he pitched Wednesday against the Astros .

"This young man knows how to pitch," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "He should pitch in the big leagues for a long time, barring injury. He's got a bright future."

Burnett, the Class AA Eastern League pitcher of the year last year and a former No. 1 pick, gives the Pirates two left-handers in the rotation. That's an advantage in PNC Park and against lineups such as the Cardinals and Reds that are stacked with left-hander hitters.

Vogelsong's 7.10 ERA was the worst on the staff.

The bullpen is a concern because Salomon Torres and Brian Meadows have been overworked, and Torres faces a suspension beginning Monday. But with the trading deadline approaching and Kris Benson on the market, Vogelsong could return to the rotation soon.

"I think at some point in the very near future he'll be back in the rotation," McClendon said.

Vogelsong has been used as a reliever before and took the move in stride.

"I'm going to pitch when they tell me to pitch," Vogelsong said. "If they think it's best for me to be in the bullpen, that's fine with me."
