cooz3--welcome to Atlanta. I will forewarn you that you are coming to Atlanta on one of the busiest weekends of the year for one of the biggest series for the Braves of the year. Basically, that means traffic is going to be TERRIBLE! Atlanta traffic is not the worst or the best in the country, but when more people are visiting than normal, it gets really bad.

Basically, there are a couple of avenues that you can take to make this as enjoyable as possible.

1. Stay close to the stadium. This is easier if the games are the most important thing, but the downtown scene and restaurants really lack.
2. Stay in Midtown. Midtown is the current happening scene for 26 to 35 year old people. There are bars that cater to younger and older crowds, but the majority is in the mid-20s to mid-30s crowd. This is probably your best bet for proximity and variety of things to do. If yuppies disgust you, proceed with caution.
3. Stay in Buckhead. This is the furthest area inside the perimeter from Turner Field. If you are very young 21-24, then this is a good place for bars for you. If you are older than this and do not like the zoo scene, stay away. This is my favorite area for restaurants, though, but head somewhere else for after-dinner entertainment.

Tickets

My wife and I are moving in a week and a half or I would offer to show some hospitality to you and yours.

If you have questions about specific types of restaurants or bars, I will be glad to help.

Getting ready to turn 30 myself. Your description is close to mine with the partying but not up-scale. You still might want to stay in the Midtown section. There are a ton of bars there. Being a holiday weekend, you just never know how the crowds are going to be. Be prepared for cover charges at any "club" that you want to go to. Probably a minimum of $10 to get anywhere.

If it's just the boys, you could end up at the Cheetah. Easy location to get to from the stadium and in the Midtown area. You get in free with a stub from the Braves. Their food is seriously fantastic!

Hotels are hard to suggest because I don't know your price range. It's best just to get on one of the sites and look around. If you find a couple, post the names (with location) and I tell you which would be best for your needs.

Cabs are highly recommended in Atlanta--especially for out of towners due to the confusing roads (once you are off of the interstates). Someone telling you it's just off Peachtree might as well tell you that it's somewhere East of the Mississippi. Cabs are reasonably priced for a big city but as anywhere try to get a rate up-front.

I'll post some recommended bars/clubs later.

dawgball, ate at The Cheesecake Factory in Buckhead a couple of weeks ago. Had a really hot oriental waitress. My wife even commented how beautiful she was. I said, "I didn't even notice honey." ;)

Buckhead looks like the place to be. I meet a buddy every other year down there when Florida State plays Georgia Tech. We go to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse for dinner and Tattletales for dessert!

Hope you have a good time cooz3. Wish I could get down there.

Did I mention Tattletales? :D

Nole--My condo (for one more week) is about two blocks from Cheesecake Factory. Pretty good place to be, but it can get a little rough on the weekends. There are better places to party, IMO.

Is underground Atlanta still there? Wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Course that was 20 years ago when I went.

Cooz--for night life, downtown has nothing. It will be convenient for the games, though. I think Midtown is going to be your best bet for location to games plus nightlife.

The Underground is trying to make a comeback and bring the African-American nightlife back to its area. Not much down there right now, though.

Not to be racial, but caucasian people do not want to go down there. The security guard out there told a group of friends of mine that unless they were looking for trouble, they needed to go elsewhere. During the day, it is a good tourist spot, though, with the Coca Cola musuem and a few quaint places to eat.

BuckHead is the Place to Stay. Cabs would be best but I liked the Train, it was fun but never been on anything like that before. Atlanta Underground was neat but BuckHead is the best.
