Thought this to be interesting article on Allgezeera today. I think they got it wrong on most Americans and troops--however agree it is effective to the protestors and liberals they target and those that whine of civilian casualties while main concern for Allied troops is continuing coverage a few of them humiliated their prisoners.

But my brother is a marine and i can assure you, nobody is over there killing women and children for fun.... unfortunately, civilian casualties are a part of war. The Russians lost 10,000,000 cvilians during WWII, China 7,500,00... These numbers dont justify anything or make it right. What im saying is, its part of war. But to say Bush sent our troops over there to kill people for the fun of it is ridiculous. I still dont know how i feel about us being over there but i do know this. This country and Saddam had to be dealt with eventually. Maybe the timing and the manor it was handled was wrong, but sooner or later this had to be done. Why wait for another 911.. Nobody cared about any of this until this admin told us to. Think about it. Israel had defied more UN resolutions than anybody, yet not only don't we attack them, we consider them one of our biggest allies and support them with huge amounts of dollars and we basically are fighting their war for them over there right now.
Our good old buddy Saddam went from our friend to our greatest threat in 15 years. There are plenty of atrocities committed in this world every day by dozens of regimes and Saddam was pretty far down that list. We didn't stop or prevent any sort of genocide, because there was no genocide going on, ala Sudan or Bosnia. We took out an admittedly ruthless dictator by killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians, tens of thousands of Iraqi's defending their homeland (much like our militia during the War of Independence), around 800(so far) of our own troops, another 6 thousand(so far) or so of our wounded troops.
We're pulling troops from Korea, calling troops off of IRR, using troops otherwise needed to actually fight terrorism and al-queda. We're using troops as civilian police, MP's, nation builders and for Iraqi stationary target practice. All job titles that they are not trained for.
And for what? Fighting terrorism? I don't think so. Just the opposite.
Is the world a safer place? I think we've created a lawless, 'neutral' state where all are able to ply their trade, most notably Al-Queda, and a place that will most likely devolve into a civil war the week that we leave. It's fairly close to the brink of that as it is, even with our 135,000 troops there.
As Haskell alluded to, it's July 4th, the day that we celebrate our freedom and honor the men who prevailed against all odds to deliver us our independence from an occupier who had every reason to prevail. The British had the men, the firepower and the desire to impose their will on America.
