Spiders

Hey Doc, if you want, I can pack up some of the spiders I see and send them to you. I'm starting to get used to the fact that the small spiders are the ones to watch for. :yup

I have take a special interest in spiders after I was bitten by a brown recluse while golfing about 10 years ago. I felt fine on the 9th tee and by the time I walked to my ball I was shaking beyond control. I was taken to the hospital by my partner and by the time we got there I was nearly in shock and had a fever af 104. I was admitted and spent two nights there and all of the toxicology reports were consistant with the toxins of the brown recluse. The doctor said if I had not been treated so quickly that the consequences could have been very severe.
Its just amazing that something that small can just kick your ass or even kill you. All I know is that I was never so sick instantly in my entire life.The doctor came up with the obvious remedy saying " If you had kept it in the fairway this would have never happened".
Since that memorable day I have made it a point to identify all of the local species. Thanks for the link, its really a neat site.

man, we are covered up in black widows around here. I don't remember them as a kid, but now, they are flourishing. Every woodpile, rolled up water hose, boxes in the garage, etc is likely to have black widows in it.
Had a friend bit by a brown recluse several years ago. He had to have surgery, and the bite was only 2 inches away from the base of his shaft Close call!!

Close call!!Spang...as a hack of a golfer...where are these spiders located? In Ohio? I am always on the lookout for water moccasins in my part of the country.

The Brown recluse is generally only found in the midwest so I think that you should be OK. I have never seen or heard of one here in akron. Unfortunately , we were playing in an outing at Blue Ash down in Cincinnati on that day, which I later found out is about at the northern border of their habitat.
They inject a venom that actually kills all of the flesh and tissue of the victom as it spreads. By the time I reached the hospital I had an open gaping wound about the size of a nickle near my ankle. The most amazing thing was that I never felt the bite at all and did not realize I had a problem until the onset of the violent shaking episode.
Good luck with the water mocs, at least you can see them coming.

No wonder it's more of a challenge to golf in Texas. You can get a brown recluse, water moccasin, and a rattlesnake at the same course. :spotting:
Had a friend of mine get bitten by a brown recluse. Bitten on his finger. They finally had to cut the finger off. He said he felt something when it hit him, but didn't pay any attention to it because it wasn't painful. Those little suckers are tough.
Blue Ash....I have played that course several times when i lived in Cincy....nice course...at least without the spiders. Glad you are ok
