I am having some company on Sat. Actually my Dad who was recently diagnoised with cancer , his girlfriend and her sister and her kids.

I am not to good with sick people to be honest.......so I make up for that by buying stuff ............ got my dad some new PJ's , some socks and a new phillies hat.

My question is I would like to buy something for my Dads girlfriends sister??????

She is my age , cute as hell, full of life ,and just as energetic as me , always used to be on the go. BUT she has had juvenille diabetes all of her life and about 8 months ago she lost her eye sight????? It is the sadest thing you ever saw. Just imagine seeing your entire life 35 years raising 2 sons and then one day going blind............. I have racked my brain over this and can't seem to think of any good ideas. I told her the last time I spoke with her, I promised to think of something she could do , maybe with her hands or something??????

Maybe some one knows of a web site for blind stuff, I don't know???? I was hoping to come up with something really cool...............

any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

Maybe a I Pod, I know a little expensive. But loaded with about 1500 tunes. She would need alittle help in learning to use it.
Or I believe you can also use them for books that are wread to you. Im not much help. Come-on folks give her some good ideas.
A book in brail if she understands brail. I dont know if I said that right.

Tara, when I was 21 and attending college I had a accident in a swimming pool and have been paralyzed from the neck down the last 18 years. I can tell you unfortunately from experience, most "sick" people just like to be treated normally and enjoy good times with people they care about and enjoy being around.

My Dad is currently undergoing chemotherapy for terminal cancer, when he is feeling well enough we generally have barbecues with people all of us enjoy being around. Good food, good beer, good ball game on the radio good company, everybody can enjoy those things, even those that can't see.

If you feel more comfortable buying something, as dj v said, music is something everybody can enjoy, I generally attend 10 or so concerts a year. Maybe get some tickets to a concert and go with the person. Or maybe even a Phillies game. Sounds crazy, but I always see blind people in the wheelchair seats at Sox games.

Best of luck, have a great weekend

Hey you guys THANKS!!!!

Great idea DJV

Sham- they are coming over for a barbaque

:) I know the company should be enough just to be together, but I always feel like I want to do more to help.............Not even being able to see your own children has to be horrible. Anyway she expressed to me how bored she is and I was hoping to think up something she could do with her hands......... crafts maybe????? Thanks for sharing your first hand personal experience with your own life,

Tara, I know this is a *poor taste* response to this thread, but from one mom to another, wouldn't it be wonderful if you wouldn't be able to HEAR them at times instead? :)

sorry, don't have any good ideas for you for your possible future sis-in-law...... kinda in the same boat as you when it comes to people that i knew before becoming disabled....just too easy to always think of them as the way they were, and unfortunately, some disabilities add limitations to the things you used to do with them :(

I've been thinking about this one since you 1st posted it. Think I've gotten somewhere.

I'm thinking flowers. I know it may seem inappropriate, but I think it may be right on.

Flowers offer something to all senses, not just sight. Even those that can see, like me, close their eyes when trying to fully experience all that flowers have to offer. Esp when a woman receives them with no strings or notice, the moment is one to want to remember. Now that I wrote this I may be giving some to mine tomorrow. She says she hates flowers. Not possible.

GL and I hope this helps.

TBONEZ,

sometimes just being around family and friends is enough. Hope the party went well.

Shamrock, sorry to hear about your accident. Hope everything works out for your dad too.
