BEGINNING MONDAY JULY 26
Atlanta at Pittsburgh (4) 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th
Oliver Perez is having a terrific season with the Pirates (+$480, 3.14 ERA) and should get a turn against the Braves in this four game set. Atlanta has not performed well against lefthanders (14-17, -$430 with only 4.3 runs per game) while the Bucs have posted solid profits vs. righthanders in 2004 (+$1370). PREFERRED: Oliver Perez if opposed by a righthander.
Philadelphia at Florida (4) 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th
The Marlins knocked the Phillies out of contention last season, and when they met early this year it was once again all Florida (6-0, +$635). But the home team has not looked sharp since April, and their numbers here are far from impressive (-$880). Philly has been profitable on the road in night games (+$430) so look for the visitor to exact some revenge for their past humiliations, as they solidify their grip in the NL East. PREFERRED: Phillies in night games.
N.Y. Mets at Montreal (4) 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th
We?ve studiously avoided taking the Expos all season and we?ll continue to do so against. the improved Mets. New York checks in with a very nice profit vs. righthanders (+$875) while Montreal is only 20-44 (-$1980 with 3.1 runs per game) in that spot. We?ll lay the price on the visitor when that circumstances arises. PREFERRED: Mets when righty meets righty.
St. Louis at Cincinnati (3) 26th, 27th, 28th
The Cards are rolling (57-34, +$1350) and after watching them take 8 of the first 10 head to head matchups with the Reds (+$455) we expect to see more of the same. St. Louis has the best road record in the NL, and we think the Reds will be hard pressed to finish the season above .500. PREFERRED: Cardinals in all games.
Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee (4) 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th
The Brewers have given the Cubs all sorts of problems when they?ve squared off (5-2, +$545) and they?ll be hard to pass up in the three night games in this series (Milwaukee +$1185 at Miller Park, Chicago -$590 on the road). That improved Milwaukee pitching (3.87 team ERA) may enable them to play some meaningful games well into September. PREFERRED: Brewers in night games.
Arizona at Houston (4) 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th
It?s hard to decide which has been more painful to watch in 2004; the Astros failing to live up to their pre-season expectations (only 45-46, -$2265) or the complete collapse of the Diamondbacks (31-62, -$3675), one of the true success stories in baseball over their first five seasons. No interest in backing either of these teams anytime soon. PREFERRED: None.
Los Angeles at Colorado (4) 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th
We?ve got a Colorado team that is profitable vs. lefties (+$795 with 5.8 runs per game) but not against righties (-$1095), and the Dodgers who are the exact opposite (LA -$265 vs. lefties with only 3.5 runs per game, +$1755 vs. righthanders with 5.0 RPG). We?ll play this situation accordingly. PREFERRED: Dodgers when righty meets righty/Rockies when lefty meets lefty.
San Francisco at San Diego (4) 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th
The Giants were embarrassed by the Padres when they faced off early in the season (only 2-5, -$410). But they?ve surged back into contention since then, and we don?t think they?ll have much success figuring out Jason Schmidt (2.35 ERA), who provides outstanding value regardless of price. PREFERRED: Schmidt.
Boston at Baltimore (3) 26th, 27th, 28th
The Orioles have already taken 4 out of 6 (+$430) and they?ve thrived offensively vs. righthanders (5.6 runs per game) even though they?ve come up short more often than not. The Red Sox will be coming off an emotional series with the Yankees, and their anemic road record (20-25, -$1500) means the home team has a real shot to take 2 out of 3 from the all-righthanded Boston rotation. PREFERRED: Orioles in all games.
N.Y. Yankees at Toronto (3) 26th, 27th, 28th
The Blue Jays have been a problem for the Yankees in the past, and if the Yankees are emotionally spent after a weekend at Fenway, the home team could take advantage. New York has dropped a bundle on the road vs. righties (-$1280) while Toronto has posted a profit in night games at Skydome (+$340). PREFERRED: Righthanders vs. the Yankees.
Detroit at Cleveland (3) 26th, 27th, 28th
Both teams have excelled vs. righties (Indians +$960, Tigers +$2075) and floundered vs. lefties (Cleveland -$820, Detroit -$970) so we?ll jump in as soon as we get a mixed matchup. PREFERRED: Lefthanders vs. righthanders.
Minnesota at Chicago W. Sox (3) 26th, 27th, 28th
Once again we have two teams that are profitable vs. righthanders (Twins +$930 on the road, White Sox +$1160 overall) but in the red vs. southpaws (Chicago -$895, Minnesota -$250). So once again, we?ll wait for the right opportunity to present itself. PREFERRED: Lefthanders vs. righthanders.
Seattle at Oakland (3) 26th, 27th, 28th
We?d love to use the Athletics trio of Mulder, Zito and Redman against sorrowful Seattle (-$2760 overall), but we just don?t trust Oakland away from the Coliseum (only 20-27, -$930 as visitors so far). PREFERRED: None.
Texas at Anaheim (3) 26th, 27th, 28th
The Rangers jumped all over the Angels when they faced off earlier (5-2, +$450), and with Washburn likely to miss this series, they get a shot to beat on up the Anaheim righthanders, who have been a disappointment this year (Texas +$2060 vs. righthanders). PREFERRED: Rangers vs. Colon, Lackey &Escobar.
BEGINNING TUESDAY JULY 27
Kansas City at Tampa Bay (3) 27th, 28th, 29th
The Devil Rays should do well against the mediocre lefties in the Kansas City rotation (TB +$920 vs. southpaws), and there?s no way we?ll consider touching the pathetic Royals (-$1755). But Tampa Bay doesn?t warrant being made a heavy favorite, so if the prices get too high we?ll steer clear. PREFERRED: Devil Rays at -125 or less.
