E. Mich. -5-, this looks inviting, but has Buffalo improved. I don't know if Hellah is still around and may have some insight. Any thoughts on this one?

This is a very good bet. I have already wagered 4 units on EMU @ -4. I was going to post a write-up on this game but saw your thread Skipper. I was really considering putting 10units on this wager.

Eastern Michigan and Buffalo were the two worse offenses in league LY combining for avg 31 pts/gm. EMU returns 20 seniors and stud tailback anthony Sherril who rushed for 1531 yds LY. New coach for EMU who was hired in season, and finished 2-1 last three games. UB does return 7 defensive starters but this is a defense that allowed 34 pts a game. EMU was #1 in their conf. in pass defense to begin with even during their horrible season LY, and this year have improved their rushing defense immensely. To cover chalk, IMO you need to have a defense, and UB does not.

Another angle I love.
EMU also has far superior special teams with 2 of the most dangerous pr/kr in the MAC, a Groza finalist as there pk, and better than decent punter. Buffalo was last in Division 1 last year in net punting @ 29 yards, and second to last in returns of both punts and kicks. they have no proven place kicker.

Both teams were bad LY, both teams should be better this year, but EMU will be "a lot" better and needs to get offf to a win in a home opener. Only a 4 unit play because I also do not like wagering $$ on bad teams, but $$ won on this game count the same, just not going to go over a 4 unit play. Line is already -5 @ Carib, and know it will be -6+ by game time on 9/02, Will be telecasted nationally on Comcast Network so I am glad I will be able to watch it.

34-13 sounds about right! Once again, I hate betting on bad teams.

EMU has one of the best backs in the MAC and the QB is a transfer in from Iowa (Bohnet) and they will be using a spread offense this year that should make Sherrill very dangerous out of the backfield. On the other hand this is still a team that has a very poor defense that has consistently yielded large point totals to teams in the past two years. Bringing the spread offense will allow Sherrill to more than likely touch the ball well over 50% of the time this year but the spread offense is not the easiest offense to run if you lack a experienced QB so it may take a few games to work out the kinks. This will be the deepest team that Buffalo has had in the past 5 years as they return sixteen starters from last years 1-10 team. The Bulls are set pretty well at RB this year as they are two deep at the position and their offensive line should be greatly improved quite possibly one of the top 5 units in the MAC! QB has been a black hole for the bulls and the competition between Piskorik and Secky could very well come down to a game time decision. The Bulls defense may be the worst in the country and they have not bee nable to stop the run at all. Bottom line in this game is that both teams are going to move the ball on the ground but at some point one of the QB's is going to have to step up and make some plays for either team to have success. EMU's Sherrill barring injury will no doubt accumulate at least 200 yards total offense himself but as usual with bad teams and believe me both these teams are bad this game will come down to turnovers and penalties as neither team has enough firepower to dominate for extended periods of a game.

MC,

I don't know anything about EMU's fan base and how excited they get. However, if you look at these two on a neutral field, EMU looks good. I guess it looks just a little too inviting. I was expecting it to be 7+. You hit it on the head when you talked about two bad teams!! I may bite anyway.

Is Hellah, Spang, or any of the other MAC gurus around??

Another angle I forgot to mention is Eastern Michigan has very tall WR's and they are now a spread offense. Buffalo's CB's are very fast but no one is taller than 5.9. Big advantage for EMU especially when you factor in Anthony Sherril's running ability. A lot of mismatches that favor EMU and as I stated above EMU has special teams advantage as well. In addition to all that, Buffalo's weakest position on the team is their LB's. Could be a long day for the Buffalo defense.

Nice write-up MC!
