KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Afghan security forces killed a senior Taliban commander and two of his comrades in a raid in southern Afghanistan an official said Sunday.

Maulvi Abdul Ghaffar, reportedly a former inmate at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, died in a gunbattle Saturday night in Pishi, a village in the southern province of Uruzgan, said Jan Mohammed Khan, governor of Uruzgan.

Khan said authorities had received intelligence that Ghaffar was hiding in the village and was planning an attack on the government. Security forces surrounded then raided the house, and three men, including Ghaffar, were killed in gunfire. No one else was hurt.

The governor said Ghaffar had been a senior Taliban commander in northern Afghanistan and was arrested about two months after the U.S.-led coalition drove the militia out of power in late 2001. He spent eight months at the U.S. detention facility in Guantanamo Bay before he was returned to Afghanistan.

Khan said that after release, Ghaffar was appointed as the leader of Taliban fighters in Uruzgan, a rugged region believed to be a stronghold of the hardline Islamic militia.

U.S. military officials were not immediately available for comment Sunday.

Taliban-led insurgents are active in much of southern and eastern Afghanistan and frequently launch attacks on the U.S.-backed government despite the deployment of thousands of U.S. forces to hunt them down. Officials are predicting a surge in violence before landmark presidential elections on Oct. 9.

----thought this comment from Iran was interesting.I think maybe they are forgetting all the bunker busting bombs we sold Israel in the past year--I wonder what use they would have for them :)
I just hope we let them handle it so we don't have to contend with the "those" trying to twart any efforts we would have to initiate.

In an interview with the London-based Saudi daily al-Hayat, monitored in Beirut, Safawi said although the United States is deeply involved in Iraq, it is expected to increase its political and diplomatic pressure on Iran in the next two months.

"We advise the Americans and the Europeans to beware of Iran regional weight and capacity and to recognize its rights and importance in the region," Safawi said.

"We are ready to confront any pressures against us, be they political, economic and even military."

He said the U.S. military presence in Iraq has destabilized the entire Middle East.

"The security of the Middle East should be achieved by the countries of the region ... The only way out of this is for the U.S. occupation forces to withdraw from Iraq and the whole region," Safawi added.

He reiterated his country's right to possess nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, saying, "Iran will not acquire this technology for military purposes."

?We will not sit (with arms folded) to wait for what others will do to us." <---------direct quote from that butthole.
maybe im being a hypocrite because that quote is how i feel about the war on radical islamic terrorist.
