Has anyone seen Friday Night Lights yet? The film was filmed here in Odessa and is about my old high school. The author of the book received death threats after the book was wrote and was afraid to come back to the Odessa. The movie has everyone real excited now and they can't wait for the movie which will be shown next week. The movie has been shown in different area's now. The author is now a hero and has been back for book signings. The people here changed their minds since the city and MOJO will be seen nationwide. I feel thats two faced and the city should be ashamed of themselves for slandering the book but promoting the movie.

Ive seen commercials for it and all I can figure out is its about a highschool football team. What is the story about?? Without giving the ending away. It looks interesting.

It's about football at it's best in high school. Coaches, fans, parents and Black students.

I remember reading the book about 14 years ago and was surprised to learn how serious high school football is in certain parts of the country. I am looking forward to seeing the movie. I heard from sneak previewers that it is very disturbing in ways, will surprise alot of people, and is worth the price of admission.

People freqently tend to look past the ugly side of HS sports, esp. something as big as football in West Texas. This book basically shoved the prejudice and double standards of a lot of the people affiliated with Permian right in front of their eyes. Some didn't appreciate it. I thought that book did a wonderful job of showing all aspects of the season and the city.

As I was typing this, I got a call from a friend saying him and his co-workers are getting a private screening tonight in Dallas, and I am invited. So I'll let you know what I think after I see it tonight.

I saw the book at borders and almost read it, does anyone have any positive/negative thoughts about it? also, any good sports and/or gambling books, BESIDES 'The Odds' and 'Bringing down the house' I know of those 2, borders is great, free books and chairs, very relaxing, better than being at work :)

Varsity Blues was more "inspired by" than based on the book. But yeah, similar story outline.

Just got back from it. Pretty good. They didn't glorify it as much as I thought they might. A couple of the scenes between Billingsly and his Dad were tough to watch. You really felt for the kid. For a minute, I actually thought they were going to change the outcome of the final game, but it stays true to the book.

The racial implications and the type of society from the book are touched one but not nearly to the extent that the book did. It was much more focused on the football aspect.

I am glad you liked it. I am also happy that it didn't focus on the ugly part of our fine city of Odessa. The book was a big disappointment about the TRUE facts that most likely wouldn't sell books.
