could be fun

could be fun

Car in top shape, new tires and plenty of time.
Hope you can motel it when tired. 2 drivers should drive maybe 800 miles a day
If you are stopped for speeding, you pay the ticket on the spot. You can fall asleep with no notice. Give yourself 5 days don't drive sleepy, drink lots of water, avoid fatty foods and enjoy the country.
Not many people do, but I prefer driving early morning like 4am on-drive safe

Hmmm, where to start. I drive from Dallas, Tx to Los Angeles,Ca twice a year to vacation. I take two weeks in the summer, and two weeks in the winter, and it is a 1641 mile trip door to door. I try and do the drive in 21-23 hours straight thru. The roughest time was when i did it 2 times ago on my motorcycle in 20 hours, that just killed me for two days. I personally would make sure my vehicle is in top shape, and ready to go.

Always be prepared for the unthinkable, breaking down, etc. Take a set of tools, flashlight, maps, cell phone, charger, jack, etc. Take blankets/pillow incase you break down in BFE. I did one time in Gila Bend, AZ, middle of F***in BFE and had to spend the night out in the desert until a tow truck could come get me.

Take your time, if you get tired, PULL OVER. Dont take caffiene, after the high it will drop you like a rock. Also drink plenty of water, and id pull over every 150-200 miles and stretch, get out and get some fresh air, good luck..........

Great advice

Great advice

Especially, the drop like a rock part. DO NOT DRIVE SLEEPY
Lots of water, fruit snacks and no fatty foods to make you sluggish. I've thought about California to NJ next year. I wouldn't fly if they gave me a 1st class seat free.

If it's not a financial strain or you aren't under time constraints and HAVE to be there at a certain time, I would definately recommend staying at least one night, if not two, in a hotel, rather than trying to drive straight through. It will help to have a friend along, though.

I've drove from South Dakota to Dallas last summer, and this summer did a Dallas to St. Paul, then back to Dallas trip, all solo (well, I had a cat with me). I probably *could* have made it in one trip each time, but it was soooo much nicer to stop (usually in or around Kansas City each time), check into some Econolodge-type place for $40, and just be able to relax and stretch out, get a shower, etc. I was never tired driving b/c instead of trying to do 16 hours in one day, I did 9 and 7.

I know some people just want to get there and get it over with, and that's understandable, too, not to mention easier to manage with two drivers. But it can alleviate a lot of stress if you stop.

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
well....

well....

I've done this route plenty of times. Fastest/easy way is thru Columbus, Indy, then I-70 thru Topeka and Denver to catch I-15 into LV.

takes almost 40 hours of driving time.

what are the specifics? What you driving? can you stop and get hotel rooms? Hauling a load? (i.e. if taking heavy load in weak car, don't take the above route--it goes straight over the Rockies). Will load be visible and liable to robbery?

what do you like to eat?

got a little time to find and eat BBQ at Arthur Bryant's in KC? or Bazbeau's Pizza in Indianapolis (neary as good as Tacaonelli's or Salerno's)? Ribeye sandwitch at Jennies in Empire, CO? Not to miss The Buckhorn for steaks. Or Duffy's (I sit at the bar)--- tons of sports here and good reasonable-priced home cooked food at this Denver institution. Free State Brewery in Lawrence, KS. I could go on..

actually, I don't drive across the USA, I eat my way across the USA....

when are you leaving? Snows can start happening in those mountain passes.

when you get into LV and the Strip, go to bar at sportsbook in Venetian and say hello to bartender Daniel J Pascarelli. He loves to meet fellow transplants from PA and will treat you well.

It is going to suck so make the best out of it and no sense pushing it , me i had enough driving as a coach when i had to scout and recruit so i flew and had car and shit shipped, had a family friend/player of mine at unlv of mine drive here from pittsburgh with his car and his dad came with him and flew back they said it was a long ass drive, hell i get on edge just flying back home 4 hours so could not do the drive thing, like i said i put in way to many miles as a coach, my long driving days are over. it is plane then rent a car for me and when i move back east i will ship it all again in a truck .

will see you soon call when you get settled in.

t-ray that is the best way to go by far know people who have tried different ways and just was not as easy as taking 70 to 15, at least from pittsbugh. i don't know how the other person went they went 70 to somewhere around st.louis and then south then came through az, don;t know why but 70 is the only way to go if your driving just hope you don't have to ever do it in the winter time and go through i think danta's pass in col. it gets shut down all the time with major snow. will have to break out the map and see what this other person did, but would only go 70 to 15 anything else you are wasting time and on roads out of the way i am sure. hell think the only road you would hit in the south is 1-10 and don't know how far it goes past tx? really does not matter because it damn sure is not shorter that way from pittsburgh or from the east(north) anyway.

Thanks for all of your help guys. I am taking 76 to 70 to 15. Went to AAA yesterday and got it all mapped out. Does anyone know if there are a lot of tolls on 70? We are going to do this in 2.5 days leaving on Nov 1st and arriving into Vegas on the 3rd sometime in the afternoon. TRay, I will def go to the Venetian to meet him since I am going to be alone for a while until I meet some people. Fletch, I will def contact you as soon as I get settled in. I will be living in the Pueblo Verde Apts on Green Valley Pkwy. if you know where that is. Anyway I will let everyone know how the move goes. Oh yeah, when does the snow usually start in the Rockies?

I don't think there any any tolls on 70 on this side of the Mississippi River. Enjoy the drive through Indy, because after you get out of town it is pretty boring for a while

76-70, maybe I am losing my mind, but wont you have to grab 79 after 76 to get to 70? If so if you think you'll be ready for a break I will be more than happy to meet you in Washington PA for something to eat if out schedules work out. Washington PA is where you will catch 70, unless you can get 70 way before I think you can.

You should be fine.... I've made the trip from MICHIGAN by myself twice in car, once in JAN and the other in MARCH. Due to the winter, I drove south through KENTand down thru TEXAS coming up to LA area. I had snow/sleet etc to deal with, so I avoided the northern route. Being that it is gonna be NOVEMBER, you may want to consider this to avoid sudden snow showers, sleet, icy conditions, etc... one accident or mishap and you're screwed.

Both trips I made in less than three days driving alone.... yes, I'm a bit psychotic by most standards, but I was able to drive about 18 hrs at a time, sleep six, and hit it again. My last trip out I did 2568 miles in just under 51 hours... :scared

That was in my PORSCHE 944 though, and I averaged nearly 120 thru TEX/ARIZ following a BEEMER and BENZ.... IT WAS SO FUN!!!!!!!!

Btw.... not recommended for the faint of heart!

I would think seriously of taking the middle of the map road thru DENVER and going that way. I believe that's the 70 you mentioned and coming up the 15. Shouldn't be too much snow, just travel by day thru the ROCKIES!~ Great scenery and NO DITCHES, just CLIFFS!

If weather gets bad early this year, take the SOUTHERN route thru KENT, OKLA, TEX, etc and stop off in SAN DIEGO and enjoy some much needed sun. SD only leaves like five hours back to VEGAS and it's worth it to see the BEACH there. Damn place is sick.... always between 75-85 all year round it seems. Besides, SD had CASINOS too and TIJUANA ain't far off from there!!! Cheap beers and cheaper ladies across the border!!!! ;)

You may need some penicillin upon returning, but you can buy that while you're there buying your CHEAP VIAGRA~

Last thought.... drink bottled fluids, beer, soda, etc.... don't take pills with THEIR water amigo!

Good luck on the trip!!!!!!!!

Randercity- Did you get pulled over at all going 120 through Texas and Arizona? If not, good work. I got pulled over going freaking 74 in a 70. In fairness, the guy did let me off with just a verbal warning, but come on... four over?

Nope... I made sure I stayed in the middle of the other two cars most of the time, figuring the cop would either go after the first guy to hit the radar or chase the last one to pass him....

It was stupid I agree, but it was fun! We probably only went that fast for 150 miles or so. Once they turned off, I set the cruise back down to 80 or 85.

I agree, 4 over sucks! :cursin: I'd be pissed too if he tried to give me a ticket!
