IT ISN'T official - not yet anyway - but keeping Clinton Portis from reaching his third career 1,000-yard rushing season tomorrow probably will have to be done without Mark Simoneau.
The Eagles linebacker, who suffered a concussion against Dallas Monday night in the third quarter, did not practice yesterday and will be a game-day decision.
Adding to the problem is that Nate Wayne, who did practice, still is recovering from a pulled hamstring and also will be a game-day decision.
On the official injury report, Simoneau is listed as questionable and Wayne doubtful.
All of which means that the stakes for the Eagles' run-challenged defense are high, considering that the 3-6 Washington Redskins are a desperate team with a solid ground threat and a young quarterback in Patrick Ramsey to rally the team and take some of the heat off of Portis.
"We look forward to the challenge of playing the Redskins," coach Andy Reid said after yesterday's shortened practice. "We know they're going to come in here and give us their 'A' game and we're preparing ourselves for that and we look forward to the challenge."
Portis, sixth in the league in rushing, already has 891 yards on 221 carries this season and needs only 109 more yards to reach 1,000. To keep him from doing that, the Eagles will have to move players around and bring someone up from special teams, creating possible problems in that department.
"Not very comfortable," was what defensive coordinator Jim Johnson said when asked how he felt about the linebacker situation.
Ike Reese and Keith Adams are the most likely candidates to move up, though Adams suffered a sprained ankle Monday and his status remains unclear. Adams practiced yesterday and is listed as probable.
Reese is a capable fill, but it will leave a problem on special teams, Johnson said.
"The thing that hurts a lot of times is those guys help [coach John Harbaugh] on special teams, so that's the biggest situation we have," Johnson said, noting that he'd be "more comfortable" if Reese and Adams could stick with just playing weakside linebacker and avoid special teams. "But I know these guys have to help on special teams, too."
One answer could be to bring a player up from the practice squad, Johnson said.
"There are things I'd like to do, but it's out of my hands," Johnson said. "We might not know until [today] or Sunday. I don't know. We might have to piecemeal a little bit. Maybe all three will be ready and we kind of just rotate them little bit. We'll see."
While the defensive situation remains uncertain, one thing that's not at issue is the team's resolve. To a player, any mention of not being up to the challenge posed by a division opponent was dismissed with attitude.
"They are a good team regardless of the record," defensive tackle Hollis Thomas said. "They have a great running game, and they have three or four really good receivers, and they have a good young quarterback who can sling that thing.
"And their defense is playing great right now, so it's going to be a hard-fought game. You can't take them lightly, especially because it's a division game."
The answer, according to defensive tackle Darwin Walker, is just to go with the moment.
"The adversity is always there, you just take it game-by-game, step-by-step, play-by-play," Walker said. "Coming off of a [short week] is just part of the adversity."
Other injuries
Reno Mahe (high ankle sprain) remains in a hard cast and on crutches and will not play. Dexter Wynn is expected to fill in returning punts. Defensive end Jerome McDougle (knee sprain) is out. Defensive tackle Corey Simon (groin) and right guard Jermane Mayberry (calf strain) both practiced but are listed as questionable.
