And Willingham, with his non-chalant attitude the final few minutes of the game (running the ball, milking the clock, punting on fourth down) didn't make too many ND boosters and bettors too happy.

So. Cal
sure seemed like both coaches had an understanding that they would do whatever it took to have sc cover.

why is the team that is UP 24 have a sense of urgency on offense while the team down...couldn't care less.

on another note...i've been calling for that type of fake punt for years.....there's NO WAY that there can't be PI called...it's actually a BS rule that sould be changed but why teams dont take advantage of it, i'll never understand.

Let me explain why USC is a ca$h cow for 2h wagers. Especially this year.

Carroll on defense plays a vanilla type defense in the 1h of games. It is sorta a bend but don't break defense. Keep everything in front of you. He see's what the other team is doing on offense and makes adjustments at halftime. Why?

Carroll does NOT want the other team to make ajustments on his defense. That is why USC seems to always dominate 2nd halves. Teams cannot make adjustments to Carroll's schemes.

His system/style works. Same with Chow. Everything in the 1h is to set up the teams for the 2h. Now on offense, part of the reason USC sometimes starts off slow is because they are freaking YOUNG! This is an extremely young team at USC. They are all coming back next year.

That all said. YOU HAVE TO BEAT USC ALL 4 QUARTERS!

When USC was up 7 at half, I called in my sportsbook from the Colisium and laid a big wager on USC 2h. The game was a classic Carroll/Chow gameplan. USC up 7 at half with momentum spelt doom to the Irish. I got cold feet against Arizona last game but not tonight.

Against OU or AU in the Orange Bowl, USC just needs to stay within 7 at halftime against either opponent. Now that is not to say USC doesn't want to be up by a lot at half, but if USC is within 7pts at half, USC will win.

Those are the facts as to why USC is successful and why they are such a great 2h team. Not many people know that. USC plays it vanilla in the 1h and executes their system in the 2h. Give yourself the advantage of adjusting to your opponent and give your opponent the disadvantage of adjusting to your vanilla schemes. Plus you set up your opponent and see their tendancy's in the 1h. Everything has a purpose and I don't think there is a college football team that does this in the country. I know for a fact this is what USC does and it works.

That all said, USC defense wasn't exactly sharp tonight. Especially against the run. However, on an off night, USC only gave up 10pts and shut out ND in the 2h. Not too bad for not playing your best ball on defense. Plus ND played really well tonight and I think TY had his team well prepared. He just got outcoached and faced a team who is more talented. Remember, this is prob. the biggest rivalry in college football and this essentially was ND bowl game.

LOL...You forgot Carrroll's genius scheme that countless times had the Irsh flat out drop passes and the way he got the ND nose guard to jump off sides...turned a 4th down punt into a TD pass back breaker...call it sour grapes but ND flat out GAVE AWAY that cover...

yup, If the spread were the same and the same two teams played today, I would bet ND again. At +24 ND is the right side in that matchup 9 times out of ten.

Not bitter at all, just feel that the way ND ran the ball that they would cover more often than not in that matchup. Two things led to the cover there, a fake punt and a missed FG by ND.

Scott,

So what are your thoughts on "classy" Pete Carroll faking a punt with 7 minutes to go in the 4th quarter???

If I remember correctly, you were ALL OVER Bob Stoops for doing the same thing against Nebraska.

At least Stoops had a legitimate reason to be doing so (possibility of dropping to #3 in the BCS). USC is SOLID at #1, and everyone knows it.

Carrol has since said he WAS running up the score. He did this so there would be no doubt later in the rankings if things got complicated. He regretted doing it, esp doing it to ND, but he felt he had to.
