I haven't downloaded a single song for over a year, what service are you guys using to download music these days? What about the legality of it? I see alot of places selling a liscense to do it, but I am not sure they are on the up and up. Are people still getting busted for "file sharing"? I have been out of the loop on this for a while now so I need some info.

People are still getting busted, the RIAA will continue to come after people, wrote a 30 page paper about it for law school, I still download, now I use ARES, have found everything I am loooking for on it. If the RIAA wants to come after me they can kiss my :moon: because I will already be in debt up to my eyeballs with loans from school, join the crowd.... :142lmao:

Be careful though, they look for popular songs, lot of pop music and such. They also put out fake songs that will just be loud annoying noises, etc...

what u can do instead of download it is rip it. It is sort of a high tech way of recording off the radio. U will need alot enough room on your hard drive to do this. (i would say 150 plus gigs or more).
U will need have installed winamp on your computer, to listen to the the stations. I don't know if other programs work, but that is what i use. I would dl the newest one. After you have winamp, Download a program called STREAMRIPPER.

http://streamripper.sourceforge.net/sr32/
or
http://streamripper.sourceforge.net/
That should explain everything u need to know.

After the program is installed you can go to http://www.shoutcast.com/ and select the type of station you would like. As long as you don't share the songs it is totally legal. Streamripper will even cut the files up and label them (most of them) for u.
GL and happy ripping

Being a musician & songwriter, I completely understand the Artist's concerns and complants about illegal downloading of music. So I question where the consistancy lies? Many of you who would justify downloading music for free are the very same people that yell & scream about people that use Pirated Software such as WinXP or Music Programs. Stealing is stealing and I would leave you with one thought.
Just what would you do if at the end of the weeks worth of work in your individual jobs, your boss said, "We are not paying you this week for your work" ?
I'll bet you would go after them with everything you had including bring them to court if necessary. So songwriters want to get paid for their work and too many people are more concerned about their pockets and have no consideration for anyone elses.
Simple: If you think the price of music is too high, don't listen to it. Oh yeah, I'll bet you think the price of gas is too high so are you stealing gas too?

I just have one question.............Is anyone on this site bitter? :cursin:

If you are refering to me, I would offer that my comments are simply for debate about an ongoing issue. You can't have it both ways in life. That's not what makes us better people. We all want something for nothing but when you think about the hours of work that go into any product for consumer consumption, it is only right that there is compensation. What the consumer has to decide is, do you want it bad enough to pay the price being asked? If not, forget about it !!!

btw ~ I'm certainly not bitter, I enjoy debate

YC, I was more asking along the lines of the best legal way to do it. Sorry if you were offended, but to use your own analogy, if I offered you a better cheaper way of buying gas would't you use it. Thats all I'm looking for here.

There are places on the web that will sell you a liscense to downlad as much music as you want, but you need your own progam like Kazza, seems fishy to me. I think I would be better off wipping my ass with that liscense if push came to shove from the RIAA. I also think a buck a song from Napster is robbery, for crying out loud they have NONE of the cost of traditional music sales as far as pressing the disc, packaging and shipping and retailing the music, so sorry, I think a buck a song on top of the monthly fee is nuts. I am just looking for the best alternative. Oh, and yes people do steal gas all the time because the price is so friggin high, ask anyone who owns a convienence store that sells gas about drive offs and you will get no sympathy about music being shared.

Ok I think I'll throw you a bone, I too have utilized Napster to locate and download a song. A couple of years ago, I really wanted to hear 'Under My Thumb' by the Rolling Stones and none of the record stores had it except Napster. So I did the unthinkable. So I guess I can't throw too many stones now can I ?

That concept doesn't hold water for me. I agree that there is a great imbalance amongst athletes and performers getting more compensation than what is reasonable especially when you consider the highest paid performers are mostly people with carbon copy talent. Most of their music doesn't appeal to me at all.
So when there's no substance, the artist is left with how much booty they can show or how badass they can try to betray. But they get paid what the industry commands. And WE are the industry believe it or not. If you or I don't like that a CD cost XYZ then don't buy it and don't go to their shows. I grew up in the 70's back when music had substance. The bands that were big not only put on shows but each and every band was distinct. When you went to a Pink Floyd concert you were visually & musically wowed. The athletes today can't even carry a conversation at a high school level but each one of them has enough money to buy Rhode Island. For what reason, because they can shoot a basketball or punch somebody's face harder than the next guy? But WE buy the tickets to see this and on Sunday everybody watches the game and then goes out and buys the products that sponsor the networks. So, we the consumer are responsible for the outrageuos salaries that these people are making. So they're not greedy, we are the one's that are greedy because we can't get enough of this outrage. We are a society that adores smoke & mirrors with no substance because that's all we demand.

*** On another note ****

From one Homey to another .. GO OAKLAND !!!

www.itunes.com is a place where you can download music from, I think Best Buy has something called Rhapsody is a music service that the RIAA doesn't mind

I guess I've taken a Devil's Advocate stance on this subject but I only do it for the fun of it. Sort of Piont & Counter-Piont. However, downloading music for free is not the way you get things changed. That doesn't make a statement to the record industry about pricing. Not buying the music at all, makes a statement about pricing.
