Seriously, why dont they? I think it would take care of all of this, AND be more profitable--so does anyone have any input as to why they dont go to a playoff system much like in basketball?

Its all about the money. Bowls dont want to make their games meaningless. Schools lose out, big money ppl lose out, not
in America.

Hard to change when so much cash at stake.

but how would they lose $$$? I dont see it, it seems they could make alot more, as alot of the bowls right now are in the red, (ie- Rose Bowl being one of the biggest)

i don't know the exact # of bowls, but are there more than 32 ? 32 team playoff may be too much, but a 16 team is reasonable. also, the "left over " bowls would still be attended by certain schools. i , being a memphis fan, would still attend a bowl game even if it were not part of a playoff. the $$ from a play off would be outstanding. there are some stubborn, money grubbin sob's out there that do not want to lose the current system. pitiful. the higher institutions of learning are nothing but money pits anyway.

i blame the big conf that have perennial payouts from their bowl tie ins. ie. what coach from the pac 10 would vote against the rose 13mill payout ?
just an example. it is as always the haves and have nots. how good is louisville this year ? who knows ? but they are chomping at the bit to get out fo conf usa to join the big east. it is all about $$.

Here are couple reasons

School Presidents don't want it. Schools start the spring semester in Jan. and finals are in the middle of December. Also what if a player(s) don't make grades in fall semester they can't play in Jan. if it is in spring semester.

Fans would have to travel to each playoff round. Unless you make each playoff round at one teams home site. Most fans cannot spend that type of money to watch their team play each round. Maybe they won't fill up the early playoff round stadiums if they are played at a neutral site. If we have 16 team playoff, that means only 8 games, then 4 games, then 2 games then 1. Thats 15 games instead of the 30 bowl games we have now.

INJURIES. Playing 4 extra games (16 team playoff) you risk a lot more injuries. Teams that don't really deserve to win NC beased on seasons play could sneak themselves a NC because a team who dominated all season lost their starting QB in a playoff round. Think about it.

That all said, I would be in favor of keeping bowl games and installing a 4-team playoff system. First round in middle of Dec. and 2 winners play Jan. 4th and the 2 losers play each other Jan. 2. Something like that. Sounds logical to me.

#1 vs #4
#2 vs #3
Play in dec. say Dec. 15th

#1 vs #2 (if both win) play Jan. 4th

#2 vs #3 (if both lose) play Jan. 2nd.

Something to think about.

Its all about the MONEY! Schools have also talked about the additional exspense's for travel, meals and lodgeing. I wish we had a playoff.

Surely it wouldn't be that difficult to set aside 7 bowl games, and have the Top 8 teams qualify for them. 8 teams play in 4 bowl games one weekend...the 4 winners play the next weekend in 2 more bowl games, and the two winners of those play in the final bowl game for the championship. Have the 7 bowls rotate as the 4 BCS bowls do now (ie. one year Fiesta is the biggie, the next year it's one of the first-round bowls, and the Orange Bowl is the championship game, etc). Keep all the other bowl games so teams 9 thru whatever can still have their moment to shine.

Bowl season goes about 3 weeks now as it is. It shouldn't be that hard to do.

money. i don't buy into that crap of missing classes or tests. kids in the basketball programs are out in hawaii or alaska for a week at a time sometimes. i think even if you get a 4/8/16 teams playoff people are still going to bitch about what teams didn't make it.

Scott, that was a very insiteful write up...Definatley true, this isnt the NFL where the fans are willing to go to every playoff game and fill the seats..Homefield is huge in college so they would have to make it at neutral sites etc
