G-Man, I always respect your opinion & look forward to your insight on games in both CBB & CFB. Here I must respectfully disagree.
Utah is a very good team. They on thier best could not beat USC, OU, Texas, or Auburn. With Cal they would have an outside shot.
But forget about those teams & lets just stick with Texas.
First Utah schedule
A&M, Zona, Utah St, Air Force, New Mex, UNC, UNLV, SDST, Colo St, Wyoming & BYU.
That is the 57th ranked schedule in difficulty. Do you honestly think UT would not also run the table with that schedule? Teams such as Air Force, SDST, Colo St & Wyoming would not hang 28 on Texas as they did vs Utah.
Texas played the 18th most difficult schedule.
What I feel is the huge advantage for Texas running game vs the WEAK Utes run D. Honestly if UNLV can run for 311, if Air Force can run for 302, & CSU can run for 226 on them..what would Benson & Young do them? None of those teams have a ground game that is remotely close to UT's in talent...yes AF is a running team that puts up good #'s, but they dont have a Benson.
Also those lesser teams never had a lead on Utah, so the run game could not be featured. So all season long no team, sans AF, has pounded Utah with run, & from my recalling AF was one of the few games Utah struggled with a bit.
Utah gives up a 151 yards/game 4.1 yds/carry..vs that schedule? Texas hammers out 302/ game on the ground & averages a whooping 6 yards a carry.
Utah cant stop power running. Texas excels at power running. That is a not a formula for success for the Utes. UT would simply wear them out. They would dominate TOP & by the 4th Q Utes would be getting gutted for 10 yards a pop by Benson.
On offense the Utes quick hitting run game & screens game woudnt work. If you had to compare any O UT played this season that is the closest to Utah it would have to be Mizzou or TT Look how Texas contained Texas Tech & MIzzou. Both held under 400 yards & the majority of Tech yards came in garbage time since it ended up a 51-21 game.
The one common oppenent would be A&M in which UT held them to 278 total yards to Utah D holding them to 437. A&M opening day was not nearly as good as they were closing out the season either.
I could go on, but this is probably boring folks.
Just my 2 cents.
