ELON ? Already dangling in a challenging state of flux, the Elon University men?s basketball program has been jolted further.
The school announced Monday that sophomore guard Matt Nowlin, one of the Southern Conference?s most prolific 3-point shooters, has left the team.
Gary Nowlin, the player?s father, said that his son made the decision based on personal reasons.
?He?s seeking a school closer to home,? Gary Nowlin said from his family?s Roanoke, Va., home. ?From the beginning he?s felt like this hasn?t been a good match.?
Matt Nowlin connected on a league-leading 82 shots from 3-point range last season and earned a spot on the Southern Conference?s all-freshman team.
He was Elon?s second-leading scorer this season with nine points per game. His 15 baskets from beyond the arc rank first on the team.

It stands as the second damaging personnel blow in the last two weeks for the Phoenix.
Leading scorer Jackson Atoyebi, an All-Southern Conference performer last season, remains sidelined with an injury to his left shoulder. He has missed Elon?s last three games.
?It?s just a tough time,? Nestor said. ?You keep looking for some light at the end of the tunnel and then you find out it?s a train coming at you. That?s about where we are right now.?
