I have been dipping for 8 years. Not going to look for the simple fact that I don't think it will help. Tried to quit more times than I can count, and it all comes back to alcohol. If I drink, I have to have some tobacco to follow up with. Anybody with that prob?

i had that prob somewhat. my dippin was 2 times a day. 1 @ 10 am & 1 at 2 pm. b4 & after lunch. when i went into outside sales i layed it down. still love it, but i just don't do it. it is easier now as i have quit for several mos. get some sun flower seeds or altoids - not the same, but an alternative.

Got one in as i write this. Probably be a good idea for me to take a geeze at the pics behind your link. My Mrs has been on my ass about giving it away and is not too fond of the ol' habit. Oh well, she shops at her leisure so I should be able to dip at my leisure, right??

Yep, that'll do it! Might be time to give it away cause to be real honest about it, I'm happy with my lower jaw structure just the way it is!

Quit smoking in '78...never had an urge to go back. Then started chewing/dipping....ending up with Copenhagen which I did for several years but finally went cold turkey in '96. To this day, still have strong urges for it...read an article a while back that dipping is 10 times more addictive than smoking because of the chemicals in it ...its not just the nicotine your body craves. Now I just gotta quit this gum.

Get on nicotine patches and find something to stick in your mouth that feels like your dipping. You have a drug problem and a habit problem. The drug problem can be beat with the patches the habit, you have to find something to put in your mouth...

I have gone back and forth over the past 10 years.

The only way that I found to quit was an alternative snuff.

I used copenhagen and the closest alternative I have ever found was Mint Snuff. Its all natural and no nicotine. It comes in several different flavors and can be ordered online for around 2.50 a can. It works if you give it a chance. The wife even says it smells like a decent, she's tickled to death and thats always makes my life easier all the way around.

mintsnuff.com or 1-800-eat-mint

And no, I'm not a salesrep for them I'm just a customer that wants to help by buddys.

Quit 10 years ago this fall after meeting the woman that became my wife...She didn't like me dipping at all, and I had tried to quit a few times prior to meeting her...Since I knew I wanted to get to know her better, I quit cold turkey, and its by far the hardest thing I've ever done. The chit is nasty, no two ways around it.

If you guys that are trying to quit are single, I suggest this method....LOL....worked for me, and it can work for you, too....

Okay I've fought the urge long enough. I'm not gonna lecture on why it's bad, you guys know that.

The good thing about it is that if you are conscious about the early signs of cancer in your mouth early detection is key. The bad thing is if you don't catch it until it progresses, because it can get nasty.

For all you dippers, make sure to keep an eye out for the following: white or red spots or patches in your mouth (lips, tongue, cheeks etc)...esp in the areas that you dip, an area that is crusted over that appears to be there for a while, any persistant pain or lump in your lip etc, any sore that will bleed easily and doesn't seem to heal. Bottom line keep an eye out for these things in your own mouth and go to your dentist every 6 ms cause they are trained to catch these minor changes before they progress to cancer.

so what happens if they see the warning signs? what kind of treatment are we talking about here?
or is it too late by even that point?

I am curious.

Used to be a dipper for a while, maybe about 5-6 yrs. You couldn't catch me without one in for awhile. Then one day i just said to heck with it and tossed the can away.
It's just will power to quit. Sure, I got the urge once in awhile, but christ... all you have to do is say no to it.

For anyone who wants to quit. Its pretty easy if you have a strong mind. Every time you want to slip a lil lipper in and enjoy it - take a pinch and hold it in your fingers and look at it.

then say out loud:

I am willfully choose to put this shit in my mouth and add to the chances of my early death from cancer.

I'll lay 10 to 1 you dont put that crap in your mouth anymore if you do that EVERY TIME you get the urge.

If you see anything suspicious just set an appointment with your dentist (or doctor.) He will be able to take a look at it and if it appears pre-cancerous or cancerous he will biopsy it. The "nice" thing about oral cancers is many times pts will get a pre-cancerous white patch or something similar, which if caught early is reversible. That's why it's important to get screened regularly if you are gonna keep dipping. Don't wait for pain...pain is not usually an early symptom of cancer.

When caught early and only pre-cancerous changes are found the treatment is usually not invasive, just complete excision or nothing at all but a close watch. I had one of my 1st patients in dental school who was a dipper and I found a white patch on his lip, did the biopsy, it was pre-cancerous (showed early signs of cancer but not full blown cancer). We did nothing more than keep an eye on it, he quit his habit, it went away.

If the cancer is not caught and invades the oral structures, you'll get cases like the original link. The treatment will depend on the invasiveness of the cancer etc.

Avid snuff dipper..started with skoal at age 14...progressed to copenhagen by college. I consume a can a day...most nights fall asleep with it while watching tv. What can I say..I like it. After 21 years of consumption..really never considered quitting. Even those pictures have little effect on me. I mean, those pictures remind me of those nasty chancre sore pictures in the sex ed books. Meant to scare.

How many of you know of anyone that has lip, mouth, throat cancer directly related to smokeless tobacco? Very very few of you, if any. You would probably be better off worrying about drinking your tap water. Hell, I just went to the dentist and have zero cavities.

Everybody still talks about that young cat from Oklahoma Sean Markay (sp) dying from supposedly smokeless tobacco...that was twenty years ago.

My roommate in Texas went through a can of Kodiak a day. If I had two dips of Kodiak in a day it felt like someone had sliced a knife through my lip.... I have no idea how he was able to to chew that much.

Damn, I buy a cartoon of cigs and a 10 pack of chew at the same time and hope they last a week. They never do, but I hope.
I also buy 5 to 6 cases of beer a week, and there is never many left over. I'm 47 and have been doing it for 25+ years.

Marine-

I put a pretty hefty sized dip in my lip :)

Trust me....A dip last me an hour or more and by the beginning of the next day..I am at the damn store again.

PD1...you are a man of my own heart.

pd1- that is some serious tobacco form my friend! A carton of cigs and a log of dip each week is pretty special!
