Game Notes

Oral Roberts' 7-0 start is the best in school history.

Five of Oral Roberts' seven opponents have been held under 60 points, as well as four of Georgetown's six. Georgetown is 4-0 when holding opponents udner 60, 0-2 when giving up more than 60.
Preview

The last time a Thompson met a Sutton on the court, John Thompson III was a freshman at Princeton and Scott Sutton was in the sixth grade. Almost twenty years later, these second generation coaches meet in the first round of the Hawaii Rainbow Classic with a pair of young, up and coming teams.

A member of the Mid-Continent Conference, Oral Roberts can be underestimated. The two teams last met in a series from 1978-80. Of the Hoyas 11 losses in those two seasons, two were by ORU, then known as the Titans. Georgetown's only win in the series came in 1989, when Oral Roberts downgraded to the NAIA level during some much-publicized financial difficulties with the school. This year's Eagles team is 7-0 and despite some soft competition to date, ORU has a pair of players that will test Georgetown's outside game.

Oral Roberts' scoring comes from a pair of formidable guards. 6-1 Ken Tutt led all Division I players in three pointers last season, while 6-7 Caleb Green has topped 20 points in 14 of his 35 career games. Both were named first team in the Mid-Continent last season as freshmen, marking the first time two freshmen were named first team in a Division I conference since 1931.

ORU coach Scott Sutton will be looking for better performance from his front line to contend in this game. The Eagles will start three players 6-1 or under, while its two 6-11 players combine to average only eight rebounds a game. The Eagles are only averaging 36 rebounds a game, but have held opponents to 32.3 boards a game. Of greater significance, though, is ORU's three point defense, holding opponents to 30.3% shooting. Georgetown's three point numbers are declining of late and the Eagles will give the Hoyas trouble from the outside.

Georgetown's ability to compete inside should prove the difference in the game. John Thompson III will be looking for more consistency from Darrel Owens and more experience for Roy Hibbert against opponents where each owns a height advantage.

As with the San Jose State game, Oral Roberts provides an interesting check-up to the health of the Hoyas in December. Oral Roberts is a step up from San Jose, and Georgetown will have to step up its play as well.

picturing 6'8 and 6'10 brothers with leis around their necks and hitting on hawaiian broads doesnt elicit a 'home' feeling.

just breakin balls.

but yeah- game is on the island. line looks short, oral roberts isnt too bad a team, and theyre certainly capable of winning.

Hoyas ready for sun, tough games

By Ken Wright
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

HONOLULU ? The Georgetown Hoyas are in paradise. If Georgetown's game matches its idyllic surroundings, the Hoyas will come out of their nonconference schedule in good shape.
The Hoyas (4-2) will play three games over the next four days in the Rainbow Classic beginning tonight against Oral Roberts (7-0).
While there are no ranked teams in the eight-team tournament, several of the sport's top conferences are represented, including the ACC, Pac-10 and Conference USA. Georgetown coach John Thompson III said the quality of the field prevents the Hoyas from perceiving the event as a leisure trip.
"We want to keep getting better and this team understands that," Thompson said. "I don't think anyone here is looking at this as a vacation. That won't happen. As you look at the quality of our opponents, that won't happen."
Joining Georgetown and Oral Roberts in the tournament are Clemson (7-1), Alabama-Birmingham (5-2), Indiana State (5-3), Long Beach State (7-5), Southern California (4-3) and Hawaii (5-0).
The winner of the Georgetown-Oral Roberts game will play the winner of the Hawaii-Long Beach State game late Wednesday. The losers will meet Wednesday afternoon.
"Obviously, we're looking to win, but basically we're looking to get better and show some improvement before Big East play comes around, and that is our main focus," Hoyas point guard Ashanti Cook said.
The Hoyas have relied on freshmen so far, with decent results. Forward Jeff Green (12 points and a team-leading 7.3 rebounds) and point guard Jonathan Wallace (nine points and 14 of 30 from behind the 3-point arc) have been solid in their first months as college players.
The 6-foot-8 Green averaged 15 points, seven rebounds and 3.3 blocks in three games last week and gives the Hoyas their best low-post presence since NBA lottery pick Mike Sweetney two seasons ago.
"I think we're getting better as time goes by, but we're going to get a lot better from here. The only way we can go is up," Hoyas forward Brandon Bowman said. "[The freshmen] came in here pretty good and they all have the right mind-set and have a good feel for the game. So it all helps in this offense because they're just out here playing basketball and not free-lancing in the components of the offense. They're perfect for it.
"This tournament will give us a good feel of where we are right now. But when it comes to the Big East season, that's when the real test is. We'll see how we fare up to every team in our conference."
