nice story Box, I'm sure he's not the only one you've helped.
I was wondering if you're still coaching, and if not, why?
Thanks again.

Don't know what to say about all the nice responses.Thank you so much. There sure are a lot of great people here. You all made me feel good.JoeBell..Yes she's a nurse so you know what a 12 hour shift is.Another Steve..weather down there is cold I heard..NYSports..get my e-mail from madjacks and I'll tell you who BHS is.BigJoe..I wanted to see my own kids play basketball.I was missing all there games.I knew I couldn't stay at my school and not coach so I went to another school. No regrets...

On X-mas eve were exchanging gifts.L'box who goes to East Stroudsberg gave me a desk picture holder with a picture of me holding her up and hugging her.Well guess what. That picture was taken by the Times Record after I won a big game and she ran on the court. And guess what game it was.The game at Marist when we upset No.1 w/o Charlie. How ironic.
The picture of her and myself was on the backpage of our sports section describing the upset the next morning.
It's my all time fav picture. She was only 4 or 5. When I left my school to take another job where I am presently that picture was used again with the heading."Box says Goodbyes to.."
Kinda funny the night before i'm typing here all about that game and I get a gift about that game.

That night could be a movie. After the game I do something I've never done.L'box begs me to ride the bus after the game..I was so freak'in happy I agreed.I told my wife she'll come home with me,you take the other kids home. After talking to the TV and reporters on the court I went back in the lockeroom. We were all celebrating chanting"motel-hotel" meaning we were going upstate. My players had cleared out of the locker room as my asst's and I cleaned up a little. Then a sercurity gd from Marist pops his head in our lockerroom and says"are you the coach of...I say yea..We'll your kids are about to start a fight in the lobby."Holy Shit..we won..what the hell...".I grab l'box and the uniforms and basketball s and run in the lobby.Mt Vernon HS was playing next and they were about to start a fight with Hempstead or Malverne in the lobby There were 300-400 people in the lobby. My kids weren't envolved but were watching.I get all my players out of the lobby and rush them on the bus.We just made the final 4 and I don't want any trouble.
I get all the kids on the bus and there all cheering, slapping each other 5.I tell our bus driver Sarge..hit that pedal and lets cross that Hudson river. We were going to stop at a Mickey D's.Our bus pulls out of the Marist parking lot.Everyone is still on cloud 9.Then Sarge says" Box,weren't you taking l'box with you.....My heart stopped..Holy Shit...I left her in the lobby...I run about 200 yds back into McCann's lobby. The lobby is still packed.I see l'box holding Kenny R's hand.He was an athletic director and on the basketball committe.L'box is repeating "my daddy name is ....
Kenny says "I knew who she was but we couldn't find you or your wife.I said my wife left 25 minuts ago.I forgot her in the comotion...ahhhh
I ran back to the bus..everyone was still cheering.I was upset and my stomach had knots in it.How freak'in stupid I was.
But by the time we got to McDonalds I settled down.I went from one of my greatest highs in my life to one of my lowest in a matter of minuts.
What a night. The next day the picture of me picking her up was on the backpage of the sports section.
Got a lot of nice gifts this week.Charlie's was nice but so was L'boxes.
Again thank you all for the responses. They mean a lot to me.
I've been capping Mid Tenn-Nova...Iona-URI...and Tulane vs Princeton. Will post tomr...Hope everyone had a great holiday..

Box, didnt see your story until now, hardly been on Mjs for the last week ... Wow, after coaching for 30 years myself, I can soooo relate to the tales of tuff love .. as shakespeare once said, "I must be cruel to be kind."

As a coach we have to do it each and every day and we always wonder IF the message gets taken to heart or are we too strict, hard, old school, etc ... On Xmas eve I had the alumni come back to scrimmage our current team, all 10 that played wanted to speak to our current players; It was amazing to hear their words ( the same ones you and I share as coaches to our players thru the years) coming out of their alumns mouth 10 years later ...

Coaching is truly the servants' paying job but a coach realizes the spiritual kickbacks Bill Gates could never understand ...

God bless and keep up your code of ethics you obviously instilled in Charlie ...

your friend,
gregg

Box,
Great story! Most people would think that those of us that like to throw a few units on a game are the degenerates of our society. I find (being a lurker on this board for quite a while) that the people on this board are generally good people that like to discuss games (with a barbershop feel - opposing views are expected and appreciated) and use this as a forum as entertainment (other entertainment can cost a lot more). Your story is "real life" and helps me realize/appreciate what I have (especially during this time of year) and what others don't have and pay dearly for it. Keep up the great posts and thanks for the reality check.
