I posted awhile back that Petrino would be gone before the bowl game. May be off a day or two, but he has been given permission to meet with LSU, and AD has said he wants the new coach in place by Jan 1. 2+2 equals the obvious. Gotta think it will be a distraction.

it's amazing how coaches & universities play musical chairs year after year.

where is the loyalty ?

i guess we'll never see the paterno's, the bowden's, or the bryant's stay with a college for any length of time.

that's too bad.

Well, unfortunatley, no one has scooped up my good friend Lloyd Carr, so he has stuck around now for a few years. I know, I know, the guy always has Michigan in contention for the Big 10 title......but it just seems that they can't ever get over the hump of being a national powerhouse year in and year out like the others. Other than '97 they always find a way to take themselves out of the national championship picture by October.

Petrino reportedly met with LSU AD Skip Bertman on Sunday. Other candidates include: Les Miles, Rich Rodriguez, Jack Del Rio and Mike Nolan. Ok St and WVA may also be distracted for their upcoming games.

As a fan, I don't want Petrino, but I also didn't want Saban 5 years ago

Keep in mind Lloyd has never lost more than 4 games in a season. Go check and see how many programs can boast that claim since 1995 (LC's first season). He's also had UM in a NYD bowl game every year since his first one (alamo). Add to that 5 Big Ten Titles (3 in 5 years), 5 ten win seasons, 5 top ten finishes in the last 7 years and .....a national title. Yeah, what UM really needs is for someone to hire Lloyd away

If I am on the committee at LSU to name a coach at this point you would have to be asking are we going to have to overpay Petrino to get him to come to Baton Rogue. With his new contract at Louisville, Petrino very well could play hardball and drive up his asking price close to 1.5 or 2 million per season which IMO is way too much to pay for a coach that will be leaping from a league that is vastly weaker then the SEC. I know Petrino has ties to the SEC as a ASST Coach but it is quite a different atmosphere of coaching in the SEC compared to Conf USA where you can make some coaching errors during a game and pretty much out athlete the weaker teams to compensate but this will not happen in the SEC. Miles and Rodriguez are two guys to watch, as Miles has won in a strong league and Rodriguez is truly an amazing offensive minded coach. What I dont understand is why Jimbo Fisher is not getting any run as far as being bumped up to the top guy? I would be surprised to see Nolan go to LSU, I think he is a dark horse to take over the Cleveland Browns.

Yes your right about loyalty but it is also a two way street as how many schools in today's climate will actually stick with a coach and allow him to have a five year plan? As far as any Bowdens or Paterno's being left, I think Jim Tressel could possible be this type of coach as it is highly doubtful he would leave OSU for any other school and his coaching style would be a dud in the NFL. I think you could also put Bob Stoops into that category as he seems entrenched in Okie and you could also add Fat Phil at Tenn.

Sorry but the coach from Louisville doesnt count as high-profile. Being able to romp through CUSA doesnt tell us how good you are. And you sure as heck shouldnt pay that guy what LSU will pay him. Not to mention he obviously isnt much of man of his word, and that wont help recruiting. Petrino is all about getting to the NFL, and thus even if successful not a long-term answer at LSU.

from espn.com:

Petrino talked with reporters after a practice at the University of Memphis and described his encounter with LSU officials as "a preliminary meeting."

"We agreed my focus would go to the bowl game and to finish the season -- the great season that we've had," Petrino said. He refused to answer any other questions about his intentions.

looks like any decision will be put on hold until after the Liberty Bowl

This is a quote from a couple of U of L Athletic Assoc. board members.

"The timing couldn't be worse," he said. "It's just like John L. a couple of years ago. ... It's very discouraging, to go through a search and try to get a good coach, and next thing you know, he's up and gone if he's reasonably successful."

Frazier said he is confident Jurich would find a suitable successor if Petrino leaves.

Then he evoked the "beer-truck" scenario: "If your best manager or your best coach gets hit by a beer truck, who's going to replace him? Any good business manager does that. An AD does it."

Board member Bill Samuels echoed Frazier's faith in Jurich.

"He'll do the right thing ... and we'll get through it and everything will work out," he said. "My sense is, knowing Tom's ability and knowing his great read of people and talent, that he's already developed some scenarios if it does come to pass."
