My nephew was over for Christmas and was using my computer and it is having problems now...

when I try to run my Ad-aware to try to clean it up, I get errors shortly after it starts up and the Ad-aware scan and the computer freezes up. It won't even let me restart with ctrl/alt/delete. I have to turn off the power and restart...

Here are a couple of the error codes I keep getting...

Osd has caused an error in <unknown>.
Osd will now close.

Explorer has caused an error in <unknown>.
Explorer will now close.

I tried doing a system restore to Dec. 19th, but that didn't work...

I have Windows ME, any help is much appreciated...

boot into safe mode, try hitting F8 when you see the boot screen and run ad aware in there.

Have you checked add remove to see what is in there?

are there programs running that shouldn't be?

run online virus scan. you have viruses. the other stuff wont work. if this does not work then format/restore.

Hey Cooler, have you ever seen the "Cooler" logo you have in a neon light? That would look great in my bonus room.

Any info?

Thanks.

Try re-installing Ad-Aware, preferably version 6 build 181. The Personal Edition has some issues still plaguing it.

Thanks for the help...It seems to be running ok now except for a few issues...

1) I had to close/disable spysweeper because I couldn't get on the internet...

2) I ran trendmicrco online virus scan and it won't let me delete 13 of the "viruses" it found. It says they are in use and can't be deleted... some of the names are...

TROJ NARRATOR.A
TROJ AGENT.FL
TROJ SMALL.CB
TROJ AGENT.BT
TROJ IDLY.C

anyone know what these are and if they need to be removed?

THANKS AGAIN!!!!

You probably have to run mutiple passes of SpyBot, be sure to UPGRADE to SpyBot version 1.3 as well and once installed, get into advanced mode:

Mode
Advanced Mode
Click Settings then go to Filesets and put a check for both Usage tracking and Tracks.uti at the bottom.

THEN SpyBot scan the system AFTERr immunizing your system. You can go to:

Tools
IE Tweaks and place locks on the three critical things for IE.

Re-install Ad-Aware, make sure yah get version 6 build 181. Personal Edition is somewhat ****ed.

For some reason you're not hitting your email server. Has your ISP changed anything or
have you checked to see if they're having trouble, is your password right and did you try putting it in again???

If nothing has changed on your computer, try the following, and I'll try to explain what it sounds like, if it doesn't help you, you should call your ISP to see if anything is happening on their side, they can even tell you the last time that you actually were able to hit it.

You know most ISP's have a way to check mail from the web. The error is telling you that it is the connection that is failing.

With the introduction of Outlook Express 6, Microsoft has added an additional feature to keep people from infecting their machines with viruses. Outlook Express uses the Internet Explorer unsafe file list and the Confirm open after download setting in Folder Options to determine if a file is safe. Any e-mail attachment with a file type that is reported as "unsafe" is not downloaded, and access to the attachment is removed.

Yah may want to view an attachment that Outlook Express has deemed as unsafe. Follow these instructions to allow Outlook Express to show the attachment:

Start Outlook Express.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the Security tab.
Click to clear the Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus check box under Virus Protection.
Then click OK.

To protect yourself from viruses, its a good idea to leave this option checked unless you definitely want to open the attachment.

Another way to help protect yourself from email viruses infecting your computer if you use Outlook Express is to disable the Preview Pane. There are certain viruses that will infect a computer even if you just preview the message. To disable the preview pane:

Start Outlook Express
Click on View, Layout
Uncheck the Show Preview Pane, and then click OK.
